The Medical Wellness Association has declared 2026 as “The Year of the Sardine,” aiming to educate consumers worldwide on the wellness advantages of nutrient-dense, affordable foods. Sardines, packed with protein, Omega-3 fatty acids, and essential vitamins and minerals, are positioned by the association as a key dietary tool in combating metabolic disease.
“Given the consistent worsening of wellness metrics across most of the developed world, it is clear the wellness community needs to course-correct its recommendations to the public,” said Dr. Christopher Breuleux, president of the USA-based association. He highlighted that metabolic health underpins the prevention of conditions such as type 2 diabetes, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, cardiovascular disease, certain cancers, and kidney and liver dysfunction.
James Michael Laffety, a board member and faculty representative, described sardines as “a superfood” due to their high nutritional density and cost-effectiveness. He added that recent trends show growing global interest in sardines, including social media campaigns like the “three-day sardine fast” and coverage on leading wellness podcasts.
The association forecasts the global sardine market, which has been growing at about 7.5% annually, will surpass 10% growth per year starting in 2026. This increase is expected to be driven by heightened awareness of metabolic health and recent adjustments to the US Food Pyramid.
In 2025, the association awarded its “Superfood” seal to Mega Sardines, a Filipino brand recognized for purity, rapid production from catch to can, and high freshness standards. Mega Prime Foods, Inc., a 50-year-old company, attributes its global leadership in health-focused canned foods to the Filipino value of “Malasakit,” which emphasizes giving to society without expectation of return.
CEO Michelle Tiu Lim Chan said the recognition reinforces the company’s mission: “We are proud to serve consumers in the Philippines and around the globe with high-quality, high-value foods that improve their health. Being the sole brand to earn this seal reflects our commitment to wellness, continuing a mission started by our founders for another 50 years and beyond.”
The declaration and market forecasts underline the growing global focus on metabolic health and the potential role of sardines in dietary wellness.
