Power Drop Again? Meralco Shaves Off Cents While the Grid Burns Cash

Meralco has cut its electricity rates for the second consecutive month, lowering the overall rate by P0.1076 per kWh for June 2025.
A typical household consuming 200 kWh can expect around P22 in savings as the new rate drops to P12.1552 per kWh from May’s P12.2628.
The main driver of the decrease is the generation charge, which fell to P7.3552 per kWh due to reduced costs from Power Supply Agreements, Independent Power Producers, and the Wholesale Electricity Spot Market.
WESM charges alone plummeted by P0.6342 per kWh thanks to better power supply in Luzon, despite a marginal increase in demand.
Transmission charges, however, rose by P0.0214 per kWh, blamed on higher ancillary service costs from NGCP.
Other charges, including taxes, fell by a net P0.0191 per kWh, while Meralco’s distribution charge remained unchanged since August 2022.
Customers are still benefiting from a distribution true-up adjustment that deducts P0.2024 per kWh from residential bills.
Meralco urged eligible customers to apply for the lifeline rate program or senior citizen discount for further savings.
It also issued reminders for electrical safety as the rainy season begins, especially in areas prone to flooding.
