Philippine Seven Corporation Celebrates 40 Years with the Opening of Its 4000th Store

Celebrating four decades of bringing convenience to every Filipino neighborhood

Philippine Seven Corporation (PSC), the exclusive licensee of 7-Eleven in the Philippines, marked an extraordinary milestone with the grand opening of its 4000th store in Newport District, Pasay City, celebrating four decades of being a beloved fixture with Filipinos.

From its humble beginnings to becoming a beloved nationwide icon, PSC continues to bring convenience and comfort to its customers every day.

The journey began on February 29, 1984, when PSC opened its first 7-Eleven store at the corner of EDSA and Kamias Road in Metro Manila. Amid the hustle and bustle of the city, the store’s vibrant orange, green, and red facade quickly drew attention.

What began as a modest outlet quickly turned into a staple of daily life, with the phrase “Tara, 7-Eleven tayo!” becoming a popular call for a quick stop to grab a snack or drink.

Fast forward to 2024, 40 years later and PSC has expanded to 4000 stores nationwide, remaining committed to “being the Filipinos’ neighbor you can count on”, words of our founder, the late Mr. Vicente T. Paterno, still ringing true today.

The legacy of PSC’s leadership continues on in Mr. Jose Victor Paterno, President and CEO, as he continues the work started by his late father. “Celebrating 40 years in the Philippines and opening our 4000th store is a significant achievement for us. It underscores our commitment to delivering convenience and exceptional service. We’re excited to keep serving our communities and look forward to the future”, he says. The family’s dedication to the company has played a pivotal role in the brand’s growth and success over the decades.

Co-founder and now Chairman of the Board Mr. Jose T. Pardo, praised: “Reaching 4000 stores is an incredible milestone that reflects the trust and loyalty we’ve earned from our customers over the years. It’s also a tribute to the hard work and dedication of our team. We are proud to continue being an integral part of Filipino daily life.”

To commemorate this, PSC has launched a year-long campaign “Forty-gether kasama ang paborito mong kapitbahay”. This highlights the brand’s journey from a single store to a nationwide presence and reinforces its role as a cherished neighborhood companion.

In addition to the 4000th store in Newport, PSC is excited for  the opening of another new store in Angeles City, Pampanga, also on October 15.

Through this branch, PSC continues to expand its 21 To Go chicken and Cafe Reserve brands. Aside from upgraded store features and expansive dining spaces, this store utilizes renewable and sustainable energy with the use of solar panels as part of PSC’s efforts towards more sustainable and environmentally friendly store practices.

As 7-Eleven celebrates 40 years, it recognizes the countless moments and connections forged within its thousands of branches. From Slurpee runs to late-night cravings, 7-Eleven remains the neighbor you can count on—a trusted friend in every Filipino’s daily life, blending convenience with a warm sense of familiarity.

PSC CEO appointed as chairman of US-based trade association

Jose Victor Paterno, the President and CEO of Philippine Seven Corporation (PSC), the license holder for 7-Eleven convenience stores in the Philippines, has officially taken on the prestigious role of Chairman for the 2023-24 term of the National Association of Convenience Stores (NACS) based in Alexandria, VA, USA.

NACS is the leading global trade association dedicated to advancing convenience and fuel retailing, serving as a trusted advisor to over 1,300 retailers and 1,600 supplier members from more than 50 countries.

The election took place at the NACS board of directors meeting held on October 3, on the sidelines of the annual NACS trade Show in Atlanta.

NACS, founded in 1961, started in the US, where it represents over 150,000 convenience stores, but later expanded globally, covering 350,000 stores in total.

Paterno is only the second non-US retailer to assume the post, and the first from Asia.  His advocacy during his term, as outlined in his acceptance speech, was to build out an industry-wide technology platform that would allow retailers big and small to participate in growing digital ad spend from FMCG manufacturers. This is something that is happening in other retail formats, but not in convenience, due to its fragmented industry structure.

He cited his experience in the Philippines, which in many respects was ahead of the US as a more consolidated industry structure allowed for more technological innovation.

“I am deeply honored and humbled to take on the role. It is a tremendous privilege to represent not only PSC but also the broader convenience store industry.  I take pride in what we’ve been able to accomplish in the Philippines with technology and market share, and am excited to take things to the next level in collaboration with some of the best retail and tech minds I’ve met at NACS and its partners,”  Paterno said.

A member-driven organization, NACS is led by a 30-member Board of Directors, which includes the largest US convenience retailers, including 7-Eleven US.

Presently, PSC oversees 3,600 7-Eleven stores operating nationwide, with a noteworthy 54% of these stores operating under franchise agreements and is continuously and rapidly growing.

Paterno’s journey with the company commenced in 1993 when he joined as the Construction and Maintenance Manager, heeding his father’s invitation. His dedication and leadership eventually culminated in his appointment as President and CEO in 2005 by the majority shareholders at the President Chain Store of Taiwan. He has also served as a council member of the NACS Coca-Cola Retailing Research Council, and serves on the board of the Makati Business Club (MBC).
