KONE’s Rise Strategy: Building the Future Workforce for Urban Growth

KONE, a global leader in the elevator and escalator industry, today launched its first KONE Academy in the Philippines, a dedicated training campus in Mandaluyong City aimed at developing a highly skilled workforce to support the country’s smart city ambitions and rapid urban growth.

Currently, the facility trains 620 elevator and escalator (E&E) professionals annually, with plans to expand its capacity to 800 by 2027. By 2030, KONE aims to certify 4,400 professionals, significantly strengthening the country’s infrastructure talent pipeline.

This milestone complements KONE’s broader commitment to talent development in the

Philippines, which includes initiatives such as the Service Operations Apprenticeship Program for high-potential graduates and the Delivery Operations Development Program for future operations leaders.

“At KONE, we believe that people are the driving force behind progress. The KONE Academy is not just a training center – it’s a launchpad for the Philippines’ smart city aspirations,” said Petteri Kyrklund, Managing Director, KONE Philippines. “By empowering local talent with the expertise to keep elevator and escalator systems safe, efficient, and future-ready, we are actively shaping the future of urban living and seamless people flow.”

The Academy’s opening comes at a pivotal moment for the Philippines, where nearly 102 million residents are projected to live in cities by 2050. With 70% of urban local government units preparing smart city programs and 61% already piloting initiatives, the facility directly supports the country’s need for intelligent infrastructure and skilled professionals.

“At KONE, we strive to be a true partner in sustainable national development across every market,” said Edward Loy, Managing Director, KONE Southeast Asia. “The KONE Academy sits at the heart of our “Rise” strategy, driving digital innovation in the E&E sector and equipping technicians with the skills to modernize infrastructure. In doing so, we’re proud to support the Philippines’ journey toward smarter, more connected, and more livable cities – built on a foundation of long-term sustainability.”

KONE’s “Rise” strategy for 2025–2030 centers on four strategic shifts: accelerating digital service delivery, driving modernization, winning the residential segment, and cutting carbon, all anchored by a people-first approach. Building on 50 years in Southeast Asia, “Rise” will guide KONE’s continued investment in talent, technology, and sustainability across the region.

The Academy plays a critical role in delivering this strategy. Trainees receive hands-on instruction in installation, commissioning, maintenance, and modernization—aligned with KONE’s globally certified methods to ensure the highest standards of safety, quality and equipment reliability. They will also gain exposure to real-world scenarios using advanced simulation systems and smart building technologies, including APIenabled robotics, smart access systems, and connected elevator technologies.

Beyond training, the Academy will also function as a Customer Experience Center, welcoming clients and prospects to experience KONE’s latest innovations. These include the KONE UltraRope® hoisting technology, which improves elevator ecoefficiency, reliability, and performance, as well as KONE 24/7 Connect, which supports remote diagnostics and predictive maintenance, helping reduce downtime and enhance safety.

  • Running on Nitro: PUMA’s Velocity NITRO™ 4 Promises to Make Every Step Feel Like Flight

Running on Nitro: PUMA’s Velocity NITRO™ 4 Promises to Make Every Step Feel Like Flight

PUMA is turning up the tempo for runners everywhere with the launch of its newest running shoe, the Velocity NITRO™ 4, which hits shelves globally on Thursday, July 17.

Dubbed by PUMA as its most versatile running shoe yet, the Velocity NITRO™ 4 is engineered for comfort, energy return, and everyday usability—whether you’re a seasoned marathoner or someone who just downloaded a couch-to-5K app last week.

The fourth generation of the Velocity series builds on the success of its predecessors by delivering a mix of innovation, speed, and style—all while being 14 grams lighter than the Velocity NITRO™ 3.

The upgrade centers around a full-length NITROFOAM™ midsole, which provides lightweight cushioning with maximum energy return, helping runners feel less like they’re pounding the pavement and more like they’re gliding over it.

According to Conor Cashin, PUMA’s Senior Product Line Manager, “I like to call Velocity NITRO™ 4 your perfect training partner. We upgraded Velocity to have a full NITROFOAM™ midsole, making it the most responsive trainer in its class.”

He added that the shoe makes “your miles way more fun,” regardless of distance or pace—an ambitious promise, especially for those who think “fun” and “running” belong in separate galaxies.

The Velocity NITRO™ 4 also sports a reengineered upper for better breathability and fit, helping your feet stay cool when the rest of your body is considering mutiny halfway through a jog.

Meanwhile, the PUMAGRIP outsole, a holdover from previous models, offers multi-surface traction that keeps you grounded whether you’re hitting the treadmill, the track, or a rain-slicked city street.

In an era where every sports brand claims to revolutionize the run, PUMA may have a real case here.

Recent reviews from running forums and shoe reviewers have consistently praised the Velocity line for combining durability with performance—a rare pairing in the mid-range price category.

And at PHP 7,600, the Velocity NITRO™ 4 sits comfortably in that sweet spot between budget and elite running shoes.

Running expert and YouTuber Jamie Reviews, who tested earlier versions of the shoe, noted in a 2024 video: “The Velocity series consistently outperforms shoes double its price in terms of comfort and durability.”

The new Velocity NITRO™ 4 isn’t just for elite athletes either.

It’s built to accommodate runners of all levels and purposes—from long Sunday recovery runs to high-tempo sessions on weekday mornings.

It’s an all-in-one trainer that dares to ask, “Why should running feel like punishment?”

With PUMA’s 75-year legacy of crafting performance wear for the world’s fastest athletes—including Usain Bolt—the German sports giant is putting its weight behind creating gear that balances technology with accessibility.

The shoe is set to launch on Puma’s official website, in select stores, and at official retail partners starting July 17, 2025.

And in case you’re wondering whether this is just another marketing gimmick, PUMA seems to want you to find out for yourself.

“Velocity NITRO™ 4 is the way running should feel,” Cashin emphasized.

In a world oversaturated with performance buzzwords, PUMA’s new drop might actually walk the talk—correction, run the talk.

Because whether you’re chasing a personal best or just chasing the bus, this shoe might just make the journey a little smoother.
