GS1 Philippines Launches Service to Revolutionize Retail Sector

GS1 Philippines, a key player in local barcode standards, has unveiled GS1 Activate, a cutting-edge web-based service designed to streamline barcode generation and symbol creation for businesses. This launch, which took place during GS1 Philippines’ Annual Conference and General Membership Meeting on January 30, 2024, marks a significant step towards digitalizing the retail supply chain.
GS1 Activate simplifies the process of generating barcode numbers and symbols, facilitating the digitization of product data and identification. By adhering to GS1 standards, this service empowers businesses to achieve precise product identification using global trade item numbers (GTINs) and seamless data sharing. This not only enhances customer service but also boosts operational efficiency across sectors.
One of the key advantages of GS1 Activate is its ability to provide businesses with barcode numbers for their products, enabling global distribution. Moreover, the service offers expert guidance on printing and placing barcode symbols to ensure optimal scanning performance. By leveraging GS1 Activate for sharing product data, companies can expand their market reach to retailers and marketplaces worldwide, thereby enhancing the visibility and accessibility of their products on a global scale.
With a target to introduce GS1 Activate to over 30,000 retailers nationwide by the end of 2024, GS1 Philippines aims to revolutionize business barcode generation in an era where the Philippines’ e-commerce market is projected to reach $24 billion by 2025. This innovative service significantly reduces the time required for barcode generation compared to traditional methods, minimizes errors, saves costs on label reprinting, and reduces the need for extensive personnel training.
The launch of GS1 Activate underscores GS1 Philippines’ commitment to advancing digital integration within the country’s supply chain ecosystem. This move not only strengthens local trade but also reinforces the nation’s position in the global economy. The conference theme, “Unified Unlocked: Activating Integrated Digitalization,” highlighted GS1’s focus on transitioning from barcodes to QR codes and called for global retail Point of Sale (POS) scanners capable of processing 2D barcodes by 2027.
The annual gathering hosted discussions involving key government figures, industry players, and GS1 members. Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) Undersecretary Mary Jean T. Pacheco emphasized the pivotal role of GS1 standards in enhancing supply chain efficiency for Philippine industries competing globally. Other notable speakers included Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) Secretary Ivan John Enrile Uy and industry experts like Prof. Ana Maria Veronica Solano and Love Emmanuel Agudo.
GS1 Philippines’ launch of GS1 Activate signifies a significant leap towards digital transformation in the retail sector. By simplifying barcode generation processes and enhancing data sharing capabilities, this innovative service is set to reshape how businesses operate in an increasingly digital world.
