Fisher Mall wants to turn your trash to exciting prizes
The Philippines generates a staggering 2.7 million tons of plastic waste per year, with an estimated 20 percent ending up in the ocean, according to a World Bank study in 2021. The accumulation of mismanaged plastic waste poses a threat to poor urban areas as plastic pollution may block the drainage system and cause flooding events.
In response to this issue, Fisher Mall introduces Eco Rewards: Transforming Trash into Opportunities to promote effective waste management at the source. In support of the Trash-to-CashBack Campaign of the Quezon City Climate Change and Environment Sustainability Department and in collaboration with Basic Environmental Systems and Technologies, Inc. (BEST) and BXtra Philippines, the initiative aims to engage mall tenants and local communities in environmental conservation efforts while providing economic benefits to residents.
“In light of the recent devastating typhoon and its direct effects on our communities and environment, it has become more evident than ever that we must intensify our commitment to environmental sustainability. At Fisher Mall, we recognize that the challenges posed by natural disasters are closely linked to the health of our environment, which we hope to address through our Eco Rewards Initiative.” says Raymond Del Rosario, President of Fisher Mall Group of Companies.
“Moreover, we are proud to support and contribute to Mayor Joy Belmonte-Alimurung’s goal of achieving Zero Carbon in Quezon City by 2050. By aligning our efforts to the city’s objectives, we aim to create a more sustainable and resilient community for all.”
Together with BEST and BXtra Philippines, Fisher Mall is opening a Trash to CashBack Trading Booth, which encourages participants to bring their properly sorted recyclable waste to earn Environmental Points (EP) and additional benefits upon redemption.
The booth will be located at Fisher Mall Quezon Avenue Driveway near the footbridge and will operate every second (2nd) and fourth (4th) Friday of the month from 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM. Registration for Trash to CashBack will also be available during the trading booth’s operating hours.
Alongside the booth’s opening, the Quezon City Climate Change and Environment Sustainability Department will lead an orientation on Plastic Ordinance and Circular Economy Initiatives.
This important educational event will be held at the Fisher Mall Event Center, providing a platform for community members to learn about effective waste management practices and understand how they can actively participate in the Trash to CashBack program.
Adding to the educational value of the event, the Quezon City Small Business and Cooperatives Development and Promotions Office (QC-SBCDPO) will be showcasing a variety of eco-friendly merchandise.
This showcase will demonstrate the practical applications of sustainable materials and products, illustrating how waste can be transformed into valuable, environmentally friendly items. QC-SBCDPO will also be hosting a pop-up of the Kilo/s Kyusi Store, which will offer attendees the opportunity to explore and purchase a range of sustainable products.
At its core, Eco Rewards serves as an avenue for community-driven environmental action, addressing the pressing challenge of plastic waste while creating avenues for residents to actively contribute to sustainability efforts.
With educational programs, practical recycling solutions, and support from key partners, Fisher Mall is poised to foster a culture of environmental responsibility and pave the way for a greener future.
“We at Fisher Mall are committed to turning waste management into a collective effort that benefits both our environment and our local residents,” concludes Del Rosario. “We invite everyone to join us in this transformative effort and take part in building a more sustainable future for all.”
