Gucci Unveils ‘Bamboo: Decoding an Icon’ Exhibition in Shanghai

Gucci has launched “Gucci Bamboo: Decoding an Icon,” an exhibition celebrating its iconic Bamboo 1947 bag. The exhibition, which opened on March 28, 2025, at Shanghai’s historic Sunke Villa, will run until April 6.
The showcase explores the evolution of the Bamboo 1947 bag, highlighting its craftsmanship and cultural significance.
Originally introduced in post-war Italy, the bag’s signature bamboo handle was a resourceful innovation by Gucci’s artisans, using the material for its durability and lightweight properties.
Bamboo holds deep symbolic meaning in Chinese culture, representing persistence and virtue. The exhibition, curated by Milan-based studio 2050+, delves into the bag’s artistic legacy through immersive installations, historical insights, and contemporary artistic collaborations.
Visitors can experience works by Francesco D’Abbraccio, Sybil Montet, Chen Yanran, and Christian Kondić, who interpret the bag’s influence through various creative mediums. The exhibit also details the meticulous 13-hour, 428-step process required to craft each Bamboo 1947 bag.
Despite recent controversy over its creative direction, Gucci remains committed to honoring its heritage. The exhibition reflects the brand’s dedication to innovation, craftsmanship, and the enduring legacy of the Bamboo 1947 bag.
