Minnesota Defies Federal Freeze with Bold $10M EV Charger Expansion

Minnesota is charging ahead with a nearly $10 million investment to build 12 new high-speed EV charging stations along Interstates 90 and 94.
The move comes despite a federal pause on the National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure (NEVI) program, with the state tapping $4.5 million from NEVI and $4.7 million in matching funds.
Each new site will be placed within one mile of interstate exits and spaced no more than 50 miles apart to ensure continuous coverage.
The stations will feature a minimum of four 150 kW DC fast chargers capable of serving multiple vehicles at once.
Sites will be accessible 24/7 and located near essential amenities like food, fuel, and restrooms.
This is the second round of NEVI-funded development for Minnesota, which now totals 24 federally backed charging sites.
State officials are pushing forward with EV infrastructure growth even as federal uncertainty clouds future funding.
