Trump Kills EV Tax Credit, Slate Auto Kills Its ‘$20K’ Fantasy Truck

Slate Auto has quietly removed its much-hyped “under $20,000” pricing for its electric pickup truck after President Trump’s new tax bill ended the federal EV credit.
The $7,500 tax incentive, which helped make Slate’s price claim even remotely believable, will be axed in September under the new legislation.
The Bezos-backed startup had paraded the sub-$20K promise since its April debut, leaning heavily on the credit to sell the illusion of affordability.
Despite boasting about cheap EVs, Slate never actually gave a real sticker price and still refuses to say how much the truck will cost without the government’s help.
Production of the truck isn’t expected until late 2026, which means no one was getting one anytime soon anyway.
The company’s model is centered around extreme customization, so good luck finding a buyer who’d settle for the mythical base version even if it existed.
The vanishing price tag is a blow to Slate’s image as a disruptor, especially since affordability was the only card it had to play in a bloated EV market.
With Trump’s pen and Slate’s retreat, the dream of a cheap electric truck just got parked indefinitely.
