From Bottle Caps to Better Lives: How Beko Philippines Turned 39,000 Kg of Plastic Waste into Community Wins

The Problem
Plastic pollution remains one of the Philippines’ most persistent environmental challenges, with packaging waste choking waterways, piling up in landfills, and threatening marine life.
The Commitment
Beko Philippines, in partnership with global plastic responsibility platform PCX Markets, set out to recover 100 percent of its plastic footprint in 2024 — a goal that would go beyond the country’s Extended Producer Responsibility law.
The Actions
- Recycling Rigid Plastics
Project: Top Lun
What Happened: 33,000 kilograms of high-density polyethylene from bottle caps were collected from junk shops and waste pickers, then recycled into flakes for use in new products.
Impact: Gave discarded plastics a second life while providing steady income for informal waste collectors. - Turning Waste into Energy
Project: Holcim-Geocycle
What Happened: 4,000 kilograms of flexible plastics were collected and processed as alternative fuel in cement facilities.
Impact: Reduced reliance on imported fossil fuels and prevented thousands of kilograms of waste from reaching the environment. - Empowering Women Entrepreneurs
Project: Aling Tindera
What Happened: Women micro-entrepreneurs gathered and purchased flexible plastics from their communities, selling them to be converted into waste-to-energy fuel.
Impact: Boosted participants’ monthly income by 37 percent, adding around ₱7,500 in earnings while advancing local sustainability efforts.
The Result
Beko Philippines successfully diverted more than 39,000 kilograms of plastic waste from nature in 2024, equivalent to 13 million small sachets, meeting and surpassing its recovery target.
The Vision Ahead
“Our products are designed to deliver comfort and convenience to every Filipino home, while also caring for the planet,” said Beko Philippines Country Director Alper Yildirim. He added that the partnership with PCX Markets demonstrates how sustainability can create both environmental and social value, and he hopes it inspires customers and other organizations to take action.
