Neurobion for peripheral neuropathy medicine

Widespread lack of awareness surrounding peripheral neuropathy is leaving millions of older Filipinos at risk of irreversible nerve damage, with initial symptoms frequently dismissed as ordinary signs of aging.

Health professionals warn that this lack of recognition creates a critical gap in care, delaying proper diagnosis and treatment by up to five years. During this period, up to 80% of cases go completely unaddressed, allowing a treatable peripheral nervous system disorder to quietly deteriorate mobility, balance, and fine motor skills.

Peripheral neuropathy impacts the network of nerves controlling body functions, sensation, and muscle movement. While symptoms primarily manifest as numbness, tingling, prickling, or sharp burning sensations in the hands and feet, early physical cues are often far more subtle.

“Some of the early signs of nerve damage in the elderly can be subtle, such as frequently closing fists, stretching arms, or massaging hands. Many people are not aware that these symptoms may be linked to peripheral neuropathy, as the disease often develops slowly—starting with mild symptoms, almost silently, over long periods of time,” explains Dr. Elaine Cheeay Cunanan, Consultant Internist and Endocrinologist at the University of Santo Tomas Hospital.

As nerve degradation advances, everyday tasks become increasingly difficult, impacting independence and overall well-being.

“As it progresses, it can begin to affect mobility, balance, and even simple daily activities like cooking, climbing stairs, or driving. People may also experience sleep disturbances or notice unrecognized injuries, all due to advancing nerve damage. Left unaddressed, nerve damage can reach a stage where recovery becomes difficult. However, when identified early, it can be effectively managed, and quality of life can be significantly improved,” Dr. Cunanan adds.

To tackle this public health challenge, P&G Health—makers of Vitamins B1+B6+B12 (Neurobion)—launched the “Caring for the Hands that Care” initiative. The campaign encourages families to actively monitor aging relatives for early indicators of nerve dysfunction and pursue prompt medical advice.

As part of the push, a digital short film on Facebook illustrates a son recognizing his aging parent’s physical decline, urging viewers to prioritize their parents’ nerve health.

Vidya Murthy, General Manager for P&G Health, emphasized the emotional and physical importance of early intervention.

“This campaign is very close to my heart, and is a simple but powerful reminder that our parents may never tell us when they’re hurting, but maybe it’s time we start noticing. Because the hands that once held ours deserve to keep feeling life’s most important moments – holding a grandchild for the first time, a father-daughter, a 50th wedding anniversary and so many more. These are the moments their hands deserve to truly feel.”

Key Action Steps for Families:

  • Watch for Subtle Cues: Pay attention if older family members frequently stretch their arms, massage their hands, or clench their fists.
  • Ask Direct Questions: Initiate conversations regarding persistent numbness, prickling, tingling, or pain in the hands and feet.
  • Screen Early: Utilize accessible preliminary assessments, such as the free online Neurometer tool (bit.ly/handsthatcare), to identify early risk factors.
  • Consult Physicians: Seek professional medical advice promptly if symptoms are present or persist, as early therapeutic management significantly improves long-term outcomes.
