Canon has officially introduced the EOS R8 Mark II, a compact, 24.2-megapixel full-frame mirrorless camera designed for everyday portability, live events, and travel.

Positioned as Canon’s smallest and lightest full-frame mirrorless camera equipped with In-Body Image Stabilization (IBIS), the new model integrates technologies and control layouts inherited from higher-end EOS R series cameras inside a modernized body.

Weighing approximately 546g (including battery and memory card) and measuring 131.4 x 90.0 x 79.7mm, the EOS R8 Mark II features a updated exterior that pairs linear geometric lines with curved contours. Despite its reduced footprint, the camera incorporates a physical multi-controller joystick—a first for an EOS R full-frame camera in its specific class—allowing users to adjust autofocus points while looking through the electronic viewfinder.

Full-Frame Sensor and Stabilization System

At the heart of the EOS R8 Mark II is a 24.2-megapixel full-frame CMOS sensor paired with Canon’s DIGIC X image processor. The full-frame layout offers roughly 2.5 times the light-gathering area of a standard APS-C sensor, improving signal-to-noise ratios in low-light environments, expanding the field of view for wide-angle lenses, and yielding shallower depth of field.

To counteract camera shake during handheld shooting, the camera features a built-in 5-axis In-Body IS system. When mounted with compatible RF lenses featuring optical stabilization, Coordinated Control IS coordinates both systems to provide up to 7.5 stops of stabilization at the center of the frame and 7.0 stops at the edges (based on CIPA 2024 standards using the RF24-105mm f/2.8 L IS USM Z).

Autofocus tracking is driven by Dual Pixel CMOS AF II with deep-learning capabilities. Key performance specifications include:

• Continuous Shooting: Up to 40 frames per second using the electronic shutter, supported by Pre-Continuous Shooting modes.
• Autofocus Tracking: Features Register People Priority mode, enabling the system to lock onto and track specific pre-registered individuals within crowded venues like concerts or weddings.
• Shutter Speeds: Electronic 1st-curtain shutter spans 30 to 1/4,000 second, while the electronic shutter reaches up to 1/16,000 second in Fv, Tv, and M modes.
• ISO Range: Standard native range of 100–102,400 for stills (expandable from ISO 50 to 204,800).

Creative Controls and In-Camera Aesthetics

The EOS R8 Mark II debuts several direct-to-camera picture adjustments to reduce post-processing workflows. Two new photo/video Color Filters, “NegativeFilmtone” and “PositiveFilmtone,” join 14 pre-existing digital filters, alongside color strength controls and a Handheld Night Scene Mode featuring four dedicated color profiles: Blue, Black & Orange, Pink, and Green.

For interval photography, the built-in time-lapse mode adds exposure smoothing, timer priority, and delayed start settings.

Beginners and hybrid shooters gain access to an updated Creative AUTO mode with intuitive assistance menus, marking its first appearance on a full-frame EOS body. For video recording, the Creative Assist “Background Blur” interface now extends to movie mode, including shortcut options to trigger background defocus at predetermined speeds and blur strengths. Additional built-in recording modes include Slow & Fast Motion Movie and Cinema View.

Video and VR Integration

For video production, the EOS R8 Mark II shoots 6K-oversampled 4K video at up to 60p, as well as High Frame Rate Full HD at up to 180p with audio recording. The camera includes Canon Log 3 color grading support and integrates a Custom Picture profile system derived from the Cinema EOS line, supporting custom LUT uploads and detailed parameter adjustments.

Connectivity and streaming capabilities include:

• Livestreaming: Four wired and wireless livestreaming setups, including multi-camera switching via the Live Switcher Mobile app.
• Webcam Support: Plug-and-play UAC/UVC support up to 4K 60p over USB.
• External Outputs: Clean 4K 60p output via a Type-D HDMI port, plus a 3.5mm stereo microphone jack.
• Virtual Reality Support: Full compatibility with full-frame and APS-C Dual Fisheye VR lenses, featuring a dedicated VR Clear Mode to maximize clarity when outputting to VR headsets.
• 3D Image Processing: Support for Dual Pixel 3D Converter software, which extracts sensor distance data to generate 3D spatial models from still photos.

Companion Accessories and Technical Specifications

Launching alongside the camera body are three hardware accessories designed to expand usability:

• Extension Grip EG-E2: Adds height to the camera body for larger hands without blocking battery and SD card access or tripod mounting plate attachments.
• Tripod Grip HG-1000TBR: A multi-function handgrip and tabletop tripod bundled with the detachable wireless Bluetooth Remote Controller BR-E2.
• Speedlite EL-5 (Ver. 2): An updated speedlight flash offering an extended wireless communication range of approximately 50 meters in open environments.
