President Donald Trump delivered a live, unscripted commitment to relentless American AI development on Monday morning, calling Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang while Huang was speaking onstage at the All-In Summit in Los Angeles.
Huang accepted the incoming call during a live panel hosted by venture capitalists and All-In podcast hosts Chamath Palihapitiya, Jason Calacanis, and White House advisers David Friedberg and David Sacks.
Rather than sending the call to voicemail, Huang requested an additional microphone from stagehands to broadcast the former president directly to the conference hall.
“I’m onstage with the besties,” Huang told Trump as he connected the call.
Trump poked fun at the technical setup before steering the conversation toward national tech policy. “The great thing about life is Jensen can develop the most complex computer chip in the world … but he can’t figure out how to put you on speaker,” Trump said.
The Rift Over AI Speed
The surprise phone call interrupted an ongoing debate between Huang and the panel regarding safety-driven slowdowns in artificial intelligence. Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei previously urged industry leaders to “slow the pace at which we improve the capabilities of AI.” While SpaceX CEO Elon Musk and OpenAI CEO Sam Altman have expressed support for Amodei’s call for caution, Huang’s position diverges sharply.
Trump backed Huang’s stance, dismissing calls for regulatory deceleration as counterproductive to national interests.
“They’re just playing right in the hands of a lot of people that don’t want to see it happen,” Trump stated on the call. “That could be political people. It could also be China. And we’re not going to let that happen. It’s a hoax.”
“You’re right. We’re not going to let that happen, sir,” Huang responded, drawing applause from the summit audience.
Data Centers and Public Resistance
The exchange comes amid growing political and public debate surrounding the massive physical infrastructure required to sustain the AI boom. Trump and prominent allies, including Y Combinator CEO Garry Tan, contend that opposition to local data center construction represents an international psychological operation aimed at restraining U.S. economic momentum.
However, domestic pushback is largely driven by local environmental and economic concerns. Recent Gallup polling highlights clear public hesitation:
- Local Opposition: Seven in 10 Americans oppose constructing data centers in their immediate local areas.
- Environmental Impact: More than 50% of respondents cited concerns over resource consumption and environmental impact.
- Quality of Life: Approximately 20% expressed worries regarding rising costs of living and degraded quality of life.
Acknowledging these local frictions, Trump concluded the call by reinforcing his commitment to industry expansion over regulation.
“We have to be a little bit careful … We have to do things and we have to do them prudently, but that doesn’t mean we’re going to stop an industry,” Trump told Huang. “So I’m with you all the way. I didn’t even know how you felt about it. I just hoped you felt the same way as me. We’re going to lead.”
