  • Epson’s Dominance in the ASEAN Printer Market Sparks Controversy Amid Declining Sales

Epson’s Dominance in the ASEAN Printer Market Sparks Controversy Amid Declining Sales

Epson continues to lead the ASEAN hardcopy peripherals market, despite a notable industry downturn in the second quarter of 2024.

According to the latest International Data Corporation (IDC) report, Epson commands a significant 40% market share, outpacing Canon Group at 31%, HP at 15%, Brother at 11%, and Fujifilm at a mere 1%.

The overall HCP market in ASEAN experienced a shipment decline, with only 1.24 million units shipped, reflecting a 6.4% drop from the previous year.

Both laser A4 and A3 markets saw declines of 8.2% and 14.1%, respectively, primarily due to diminishing demand from commercial sectors.

Inkjet printers also faced a year-on-year decline of 2.4%, although this marked an improvement compared to earlier quarters.

Despite these challenges, IDC forecasts a potential recovery in the latter half of 2024, driven by increased government spending and a positive outlook for commercial sectors.

In the Philippines, opportunities for growth remain, particularly in ink cartridge machines, fueled by back-to-school demand and first-time users.

Epson Philippines President Masako Kusama emphasized the company’s commitment to sustainability and innovation, asserting that Epson is prepared to meet evolving consumer needs with its energy-efficient ink tank printers.

As consumers in Thailand and Singapore shift towards ink tank models for cost-effectiveness, Epson’s market strategy may face scrutiny amid changing preferences across the region.

Waste upcycling project set to expand to Manila, Cebu

Epson Philippines Corporation, the Philippine office of the global technology leader, has reaffirmed its commitment to sustainability through Epson’s Corporate Waste Collection Program

Launched in partnership with Envirotech Waste Recycling Inc., Epson has repurposed 213 kilograms of recyclable materials as of June 2024, preventing them from ending up as waste.

The initiative, which began in October 2023 in the city of Davao, engages select dealers of corporate printers in collecting empty ink cartridges, bottles, and boxes, which Envirotech transforms into school chairs and tables, tiles, pallets, bricks, pots and planters, lamps, garbage bins, and the like.

Within six months from the launch of the program, which saw an initial 106 kilograms of recyclable materials collected, this figure has more than doubled as of June 2024, thanks to the active participation of Epson’s partner dealers. This demonstrates the company’s shared mission and vision of sustainable operations with its stakeholders and partners.

Building on the successes, Epson plans to expand the program to Manila and Cebu later this year, engaging more dealers and B2B channel partners in the collaborative push towards sustainability.

“At Epson, we are committed to promoting sustainability across the value chain and implementing a circular economy where possible. This program demonstrates what can be done to reduce waste and our overall environmental footprint,” Epson Philippines President and Director Masako Kusama said. “We are excited to see this program further expand, so that we can have a greater positive social impact to more communities in the Philippines.”

  • Epson, WWF-Philippines complete food shed project in Tarlac

Epson, WWF-Philippines complete food shed project in Tarlac

Epson Philippines and World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) Philippines, in their shared aspiration to making the Philippines a more food-sufficient nation, completed their joint initiative of empowering communities in Tarlac City to grow their own food through sustainable agriculture-based livelihood.

Through the Food Shed Farming Enterprise Project, which was launched in 2023, Epson and WWF-Philippines have established two food sheds in Barangay San Jose de Urquico and Barangay Batang-Batang. The food sheds provided 60 households (30 households in each barangay) with local access to over 70 kilos of fresh vegetables, from eggplants, chili, and squash.

The income generated from future harvests will be set aside as group savings. The project is supported by the Tarlac City Agriculture Office in the conduct of all activities, while the Barangay Captain and Kagawad Head of Committee on Agriculture will oversee the operation and management of the food sheds beyond the project term.

“We are proud of our work in empowering local communities in Tarlac City with the help of WWF-Philippines,” said Epson Philippines President and Director Masako Kusama. “These initiatives, which enable communities to become more self-sufficient in their food supply through agriculture-based livelihoods, align with our overall vision of sustainability—that anyone, whether they be a business or a community, can operate sustainably, enabling both present and future generations to live securely.”

Apart from the construction of the food sheds, 47 community members (20 from Brgy. San Jose de Urquico and 27 from Brgy. Batang-Batang) participated in training interventions on three areas, namely: 1) cultivating leafy and fruiting vegetables, 2) establishing effective financial management systems, and 3) value chain upgrading or market linkage.

Community members were educated on the value of saving and managing finances, as well as the concept of Group Savings and Loans Associations. The project also implemented capacity development and technology transfer on food shed farming systems, including an introduction to food security; requirements for establishing food sheds; soil sterilizing, seed sowing, and composting; integrated pest and disease management; nutrient management; Kratky hydroponics production; basic poultry management and husbandry; and proper harvesting and handling.

Epson employees were also engaged in the initiative, as it offered volunteerism opportunities, with over 180 employees participating through the construction of the food sheds or as attendees to WWF-Philippines’ Panda Talks sessions. The Panda Talks discussed topics on plastic pollution and waste management, as well as energy efficiency and conservation.

By having the means to grow fresh and local vegetables, communities have constant access to food at affordable prices and stable livelihoods. The initiative also enables intra-neighborhood access, which brings product prices down and reduces the carbon footprint associated with transportation and food loss.

This brand shift also builds on Epson’s momentum towards its Environmental Vision 2050, which stipulates a goal to become carbon negative and underground resource-free by 2050. At the end of 2023, Epson Southeast Asia adopted 100% renewable energy at all major sites and factories worldwide, including the Batangas plant in the Philippines.

Specifically in Southeast Asia, Epson also completely phased out laser printers at the end of 2023, due to laser technology’s limited ability to make significant steps towards improved sustainability compared to inkjet printers.
