Epson Philippines recently completed its inaugural “Trash to Treasure” initiative, showcasing a strong commitment to sustainability and community involvement. Launched in 2023, the program encourages employees to donate specific clean plastic waste items, which are then upcycled into various products by partner organizations.
Throughout the year, Epson Philippines collected 162 kilograms of clean plastic, which were donated to Pasig City’s Environmental Resources and Waste Management Office (CENRO) for recycling into vases, chairs, and more.
Employees participate by following three simple steps: checking the accepted plastics list, cleaning and air-drying the items, and dropping them off at designated bins within the office premises for weighing.
Masako Kusama, President and Director of Epson Philippines, emphasized the program’s role in waste management and responsible practices, reflecting the company’s dedication to environmental impact and community support. Epson’s commitment to sustainability extends to its technology, projects, and product packaging, incorporating recycled materials to reduce waste.
The success of the “Trash to Treasure” program underscores Epson’s dedication to environmental stewardship and responsible consumption. By engaging employees, consumers, and partners in waste reduction efforts, Epson aims to transform waste into valuable resources and promote a sustainable future.
The company plans to continue and expand the program, aligning with its mission to create a more sustainable future through technology and employee engagement.

The partnership, which began in 2022, has led to several joint initiatives focusing on conserving the country’s biodiversity, ensuring the sustainable use of renewable natural resources, and reducing pollution and wasteful consumption.
The latest joint undertaking highlights the urgent need for collective action in addressing the pressing environmental challenges of plastic pollution and waste management.
Dino Calderon, Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) Program Manager at WWF-Philippines, shares that the Philippines is grappling with a severe waste management crisis, with plastic pollution being one of the most significant contributors.
“As a nation surrounded by oceans, the country is ranked as the third-largest source of ocean plastic pollution globally, generating 2.7 million metric tons of plastic waste annually, according to a 2015 study by Ocean Conservancy,” said Calderon. “This situation not only affects marine life but also poses serious threats to human health and the overall ecosystem.”
WWF-Philippines and Epson encourage companies to take steps towards creating a greener workplace culture.
To put this plan into action, Epson invited WWF-Philippines to host a learning session for its employees, focusing on the current state of pollution and waste management in the Philippines, its impact on the environment, and the steps that organizations and individuals can take to mitigate these issues.
The event aimed to educate the company’s workforce on the pressing environmental challenges faced by the Philippines and empower them to take action, starting from an individual level.
“Epson recognizes the importance of individual actions and how these make a collective impact on society,” said Masako Kusama, President at Epson Philippines.
“By educating our employees about pollution and waste management, we aim to foster a culture of sustainability within our organization and contribute to the global effort to combat pollution and preserve the environment.”
Facilitated by Calderon, the discussion emphasized the need for corporations like Epson to educate their employees on plastic pollution and waste management and put learnings into action. “Corporations play a crucial role in addressing environmental issues. By raising awareness and encouraging employees to adopt sustainable practices, companies like Epson can make a significant impact on reducing pollution and preserving our planet for future generations,” explained Calderon.
Epson believes that its partnership with WWF-Philippines will help boost awareness on the environmental crisis and foster a sense of responsibility among its employees. By hosting this talk and continuing to work with WWF-Philippines to develop programs, Epson aims to inspire its workforce to adopt sustainable practices and contribute to the global effort to preserve the environment.

Global technology leader Epson, in collaboration with World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) Philippines, EU Ocean Governance, and the Bataraza local government, has successfully launched a new community learning and innovation hub (CLIH) in Bataraza, Palawan.
CLIH is meant to establish a learning network that builds the capacity of the local coastal communities through knowledge exchange and sharing best practices, while promoting collaboration.
In conjunction with World Mangrove Day on June 26th, representatives from Epson and WWF visited CLIH in Barangay. Buliluyan, Bataraza, to celebrate the special occasion with local communities and volunteers.
The restoration project was previously launched in the nearby municipality of Balabac in August 2022, which was followed by the official launch of the Bataraza Learning and Innovation Hub (BLIH) in January of this year.
Together with partner stakeholders in Balabac and Bataraza, the project is implementing a local capability development programme that includes biophysical, socio-economic, and governance aspects of ecosystem restoration, and community knowledge exchange.
This component is part of WWF-Coral Triangle Programme’s bigger initiative focusing on the Sulu-Sulawesi Seascape, a marine ecoregion shared with Indonesia and Malaysia, known for its rich and significant levels of marine biodiversity.
The initiative is also supported by Epson under the regional partnership with WWF and aims to create scalable conservation activities, primarily focused on restoring degraded or damaged coral reefs and mangrove areas.
Through the restoration activities, best practices and lessons learned are cross-shared through the community learning and innovation hubs, and community champions are trained for co-management of restored and existing coral reef and mangrove areas.
“This is just one step towards our global commitment of reaching out to communities and continuing our support towards restoring and protecting the Philippines’ rich biodiversity. Our continuing partnership with WWF enables us to work toward a shared goal of a greener future for all,” shared Masako Kusama, President and Director of Epson Philippines Corporation.
“The work we do with WWF underpins Epson’s goals to champion projects that support biodiversity, inspire collaborations, and enrich lives, not just in the Philippines but across the region as well.”
“Since the launch of the Bataraza Learning and Innovation Hub (BLIH) and other succeeding activities involving the local government unit, the community, the private sector including the academe and civil society organisations, we have been empowering communities by enabling them to share and gain knowledge and practice from each other,” Project Manager at WWF-Philippines, Mary Joan Pecson said.
Known as one of the nature-based solutions to address climate change, mangroves play a key role in ecosystems, providing benefits for both nature and people.
Mangroves store 7.5 to 10 times more carbon per acre (3 to 4 times more per hectare) than tropical forests, and their loss contributes to 10% of global greenhouse gas emissions from deforestation.
Unfortunately, 62% of the world’s mangroves have been destroyed between 2000 and 2016.
“By establishing partnerships with multi-sectoral groups and the coastal communities, we innovate long-term solutions to restore degraded coastal and marine ecosystems and prioritise the welfare of our people,” said Hon. Abraham Ibba, Mayor of Bataraza.
“The destruction of our mangrove forests results in the decrease of our marine resources since part of their habitat has been destroyed, said Bataraza Municipal Environmental and Natural Resource Officer, Mr. Reynaldo Rivera, EnP.
“There is really a need for the rehabilitation of our mangrove forest,” he added.
The Learning Hub in Bataraza is set to be a best practice example that can be replicated in other locations across the Coral Triangle.
With the support from Epson and other partner stakeholders, WWF-Philippines aims to further expand the initiative to neighbouring areas to build a more climate-resilient future for communities.

“Our silver anniversary will be marked with projects that include meaningful partnerships with private organizations and government agencies, and more CSR and environmental initiatives within our communities,” said Kusama.
“Epson Philippines, together with our partners, is on a journey towards our goal of a circular economy.”
Epson Philippines Marketing Division Head Eduardo Bonoanofficially opened the session with a report on the company’s year-over-year growth and business drivers for 2023.
The past year has proven to be a year of growth and business development for Epson Philippines.
The company has seen 8% year-over-year growth for 2022, owing much of its market share growth to its CAD, projectors, scanners, and signage.
Its continuous ink supply system (CISS) products also drove revenue and sales for the company, with a 3% year-over-year growth in 2022.
“Epson is aiming even higher for 2023. The company is focused on driving B2B transformation by leveraging on digital and streamlining operations,” said Bonoan.
He added that Epson Philippines is committed to focusing more on its B2B products and increasing its year-over-year growth to 12% in 2023.
Renan Lacson, Senior Manager for Product Management, reported that Epson remains on top in terms of market share.
From the data provided by the International Data Corporation(IDC), Epson continued to dominate the market across various product categories in 2022, with 51% market share for inkjet printers, 67% for ColorWorks printers, 36% for CAD, and 83% for photo printers.
Epson also emerged as no.1 in POS printers, textile printers, scanners, and high brightness projectors.
According to Lacson, Epson’s product lineup for 2023 includes a mix of B2B and B2C products such as: the SurePress industrial printer range that features both a water-based inkjet digital label press and a digital UV label press; large format printers and new dye sublimation printers as seen in the new SureColor R-Series; business inkjet printers; and home and office smart projectors that boast of high image quality.
“While these new releases target different needs, markets, and users, they all guarantee consistent, high-quality, and high-speed products while ensuring reliability, flexibility, and performance—all without compromising Epson’s commitment to sustainability,” said Lacson.
A common denominator of all of Epson’s initiatives is its focus on sustainability, which is embedded in product and packaging design, as well as supplemented by actions being undertaken by the company.
Guided by its global aspirations, Epson will contribute to the achievement of a better future as envisioned in the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
In the Philippines, Epson kickstarted its sustainable adoption by implementing three key actions in response to its priority SDGs.
For Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure, Epson will promote its sustainable products, services, and practices.
Meanwhile, for Responsible Consumption and Production, Epson will help reduce waste from its own products in the Philippine market by participating in the Department of Environment and Natural Resources’ Extended Producers Responsibility Act, and by partnering with recyclers and other non-governmental organizations who are focused on reducing plastic and packaging recycling.
Lastly, for Partnership for the Goals, Epson will increase its network and invest in more partnerships to promote sustainability across wider audiencesand to further solidify the company as a thought leader in sustainability in tech.
“We need a collective mindset shift on par with the one that gave birth to recycling decades ago. It is time we embrace the idea of a circular economy,” said Kusama.
“Epson Philippines commits to working hand in hand with our partners, urging everyone to embrace circularity. While we have been actively working towards the sustainable and circular future, today, we ask you to join in on our mission. Let us navigate this journey together, towards a greener future.”

In recent times, a significant portion of the global population has encountered challenges in accessing affordable and nutritious food. In the Philippines, a considerable number of households, approximately 3.9 million, continue to suffer from involuntary hunger, and nearly 40% of the Filipino population is deemed food poor.
In response to the escalating issues related to food security, Epson, a prominent technology corporation, has collaborated with World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) Philippines to enhance the resilience of food systems and restore the livelihoods of local communities. In collaboration with WWF Philippines, Epson has established a Food Shed Farming System in Tarlac City.
“The system utilizes a food shed model that acts as a modular greenhouse made of locally available materials and uses green and natural farming technologies such as composting, rainwater harvesting, natural pest and disease control,” said WWF Philippines project manager Monci Hinay.
“It is an agriculture-based livelihood intervention that promotes sustainable production, integrates the elements of low-impact urban agriculture technologies, and provide communities with food security while operating within planetary boundaries and protecting habitats and biodiversity.”
Epson volunteers, together with WWF Philippines representatives, local government officials, and representatives from the City Agruculturist Office, participated in the construction of the food shed in San Jose de Urquico, Tarlac.
The food shed will directly provide livelihood opportunities to caretakers, who will manage the overall production of high-quality vegetables and poultry products and facilitate linkage to local community buyers of the produce and livestock products.
During the groundbreaking, Epson volunteers worked on plotting and seed preparation, mulching and holing, and the actual construction of the food shed.
Epson’s second food shed is located in Sapang Tagalog, Tarlac. With these two locations, Epson and WWF Philippines aim to train community members in food production, value chain, and business development; improve access to high-quality and locally produced food for households in San Jose de Urquico and Sapang Tagalog; and improve the resilience of low-income communities to stresses brought by the pandemic and climate change.
“In line with our commitment to enriching communities and enabling them to achieve sustainability, we are excited to begin this journey of sustainability and resiliency with WWF Philippines and our community in Tarlac,” said Masako Kusama, president and director of Epson Philippines. “We believe this climate-adaptive food shed farming technology is key to building resilience among communities who do not have direct access to food sources like farmland or municipal fishing grounds and can ultimately protect them against hunger and disruptions in food supply.”
The project includes technology transfer sessions for partner communities in Tarlac to help them manage their food sheds. Members of the community will learn on sustainable food production, value chain development plan formulation, and financial literacy and savings mobilization.
Continuous learning activities will be executed to enhance the skill sets of the community members in successfully growing the crops and producing the livestock products.
To promote bayanihan or community work, the community-managed food shed showcases the multiple benefits of compact and protective farming and urban agricultural production. The establishment of the food shed will also provide an avenue for the community to work together towards a common goal of addressing food security and livelihood.
The Epson T-Series are designed to be minimalistic without sacrificing performance
In today’s world, the power of visual communication is undoubted, and true excellence is coveted. As there has been a steady increase in professionals who rely on visual formats to deliver their impact, it is imperative to have the right set of tools at their disposal to bring their creativity to life.
From concepts, sketches, and drawings to design and implementation, this is where tools play an important role in ensuring that their work is represented in its most accurate form. Two industries that are built on and rely on the advances of specialized printing are architectural and design firms. Here, specialized printing ensures the final print or outcome to be completed in the highest quality at the highest levels of excellence.
Both architectural and design firms work on the fundamental principles of precision and consistency when it comes to their work, as they rely on details to leave lasting impressions. With that, they require a means to showcase that their work aligns with these fundamentals, and even excel past it, providing a best-in-class accuracy to capture the finest details.
“The Epson T-Series Corporate printers incorporate the company’s leading core technology and cater to the most detail-driven projects—ensuring clarity down to the finest of details,” said Ed Bonoan, General Manager of Epson Philippines Corporation. “Designed, developed, and built by our engineers, Epson’s technology offers improved print speeds, better precision and output quality to printouts, and excellent durability.”
In addition, Epson understands that firms will need to print on various media—from traditional paper to board media. The Epson T-Series can do just that and more, depending on the objective of the firms or the vision of the creative. With Epson’s T-Series, innovation isn’t restricted by size—users are encouraged to go big because there’s no concern for a loss of quality.
The Epson T-Series is small in footprint but large in output. The T-Series is notably sleek and minimally designed, allowing for non-invasive positioning in the office. Convenience is enhanced by the printer’s ability to hold on to printouts until the user initiates cutting, preventing the printout from falling to the floor.
No longer a requirement but a necessity, connectivity is a must. A majority of the Epson T-Series range has built-in connectivity features that support better workflow in today’s fast-paced environments. The T-Series is integrated with Wi-Fi and Wi-Fi Direct allowing you to print from smart devices anywhere in the office.
Although architectural and design firms differ in final output, a commonality is that each print needs to exceed expectations to best represent their business. Across the range of models, the T-Series is underpinned by a commitment to ensure that regardless of how they’re used—the quality is consistent and delivers a distinction against other printers.
In addition, as a leader in sustainable innovation, Epson’s extensive line of products addresses the continuously growing demand for sustainability. Epson’s T3130X printer comes equipped with a refillable, ink tank system, using high yield ink bottles to minimize wastage. This further contributes to making a collective industry impact for a sustainable future.
“With a myriad of innovation available for firms to push the boundaries of their businesses, Epson’s solutions are a perfect choice for architects and design firms—with our ability to bring their architectural visions to life, and to push the limits of visual creativity without compromise,” said Bonoan.
“Ultimately, leveraging the power of digital design software tools and trusting the accuracy of a computer control tool can make it infinitely easier for firms to share their unique vision and ideas to the world.”
