Consortium sees 16.7% rise in motorcycle sales

The Motorcycle Development Program Participants Association, Inc. (MDPPA) reported a 16.7% increase in motorcycle sales in the Philippines during the first quarter of 2023 among its four members: Honda, Kawasaki, Suzuki, and Yamaha.

Compared to the first quarter of last year, motorcycle sales in the Philippines increased by 16.7% in Q1 of 2023, with an average of 149,000 motorcycles sold per month.

This is a significant increase from last year’s monthly average of 127,000 units sold. The three-month totals of 2023 are the best-recorded sales compared to the first quarters of the three previous pandemic years, including 2020, 2021, and 2022.

According to MDPPA, 447,429 motorcycle were sold between January and March 2023. Such a number is only about 3,500 less than the 451,103 pre-pandemic figure from 2019.

Boying Mojica, President of MDPPA remarked that, “We hope that the performance of the first quarter will be sustained. The market is so volatile as influenced by internal and external variables. Our conservative forecast this year is 10% growth, in light of the headwinds of imminent recession in the US and other regions. If the existing business landscape will prevail, the 1.7 million units recorded sales in 2019 may be surpassed.”

Because of its easy-to-operate controls, the Automatic Category or Scooters took 60 percent of the total first-quarter sales this year with 269,652 units sold.

This was followed by the Business Units, which are used for commercial purposes. This category accounted for 18.6 percent of the total sales, with 83,616 units sold.

Meanwhile, Mopeds or Underbone motorcycles took 17.2 percent of the total sales due to their affordability, with 77,152 units sold. The Street and Big Bikes, commonly used for leisure and off-road adventure, took the remaining 4 percent with 17,000 units sold.

BlockchainSpace takes on Web3 solutions with Smart

BlockchainSpace, a leading Web3 community enabler in Southeast Asia, has partnered with Smart Communications, the leading telecommunications provider in the Philippines, to explore Web3-powered solutions that can connect communities, unlock new opportunities, and drive growth for all stakeholders.

The partnership marks a major milestone for Web3 adoption in the Philippines and beyond, according to Peter Ing, CEO of BlockchainSpace. He further described the collaboration as an indication of continued growth in enterprise interest in contributing to a Web3-enabled future.

“Filipinos have been at the forefront of utilizing Web3 since the peak of the pandemic. With millions already owning crypto wallets and participating in GameFi, the Philippines has consistently been one of the leaders of Web3 adoption in Southeast Asia. Through this partnership, BlockchainSpace and Smart will continue to build on that foundation by enabling more communities to connect in a truly open, meaningful and secure manner,” Ing said.

“This partnership aligns with Smart’s mission to empower FIlipinos with the latest digital innovations so they can live more today,” said Lloyd Manaloto, First Vice President and Head of Prepaid and Content at Smart.

He added that the company has always been an early adopter of the latest technology and is constantly on the lookout for programs that appeal to the passions of its subscribers, which it can turn into more immersive experiences.

“By leveraging the Philippines’ fastest and best mobile network, as recognized by Ookla, and the country’s widest 5G network, we believe that Smart is in the best position to unlock the value of Web3 in tandem with BlockchainSpace to benefit more Filipinos through accessibility and connectivity,” Manaloto said.

BlockchainSpace traces its roots to the city of Makati in 2018 when its founder and CEO successfully organized over a hundred in-person gatherings of various Web3 investors and founders to help grow the crypto industry in the region.

The company has since evolved into a Web3 solutions provider that powers Southeast Asia’s communities with more than just blockchain technology.

Since 2020, BlockchainSpace has empowered over 100 communities and raised $20 million from top investors, including Animoca Brands, Spartan Group, and Crypto.com Capital.

To further enable communities to thrive in the space, BlockchainSpace provides guild leaders, gamers, creators, and everyone in between with blockchain solutions as well as trademark community programs such as the Guild Partner Program and Creator Circle.

The Creator Circle, which will soon be publicly launched for creators in tandem with Smart, already has more than 150 creator sign ups regionally–amounting to an aggregate following of more than 20M across all social networks despite only being in closed beta.

This program was introduced to empower those within the creator economy, an emerging type of market which connects creators to their fans and brands and allows the creator to monetize their content, output, or skills all while building a community.

The Creator Circle is a natural progression for BlockchainSpace as it enables the company to utilize its successes and lessons from supporting gaming guilds and extend similar tools, support, and opportunities to creators, artists, and influencers, explained Aspen Sañez, Global Head of Marketing at BlockchainSpace.

By teaming up with Smart, which has an established network and history of impactful engagements with artists and their fan groups, BlockchainSpace will be able to maximize the capabilities of and establish a solid roster in Creator Circle.

“We could not have found a better partner in venturing into a Web3-enabled creator economy than BlockchainSpace, which has the expertise and experience when it comes to Web3 gaming and supporting guilds. With our concerted efforts, we are confident on translating things positively in the Creator Circle,” added Dexter Chan, Assistant Vice President for Content Business Development at Smart.

Aside from the Creator Circle, Filipinos can look forward to more initiatives from BlockchainSpace and Smart that will help unlock the full potential of Web3 for all.

The two companies are working closely together to deliver exciting new programs and innovative solutions that would continue to empower communities to scale sustainably and benefit from Web3.

  • Where streaming is king, Converge leads

Where streaming is king, Converge leads

Converge is not just any internet service provider. They know that in this digital age, streaming is king and they’re racing ahead to give their customers the best video experience possible. It’s like they’re saying, “We don’t just provide internet, we provide a gateway to endless entertainment possibilities!”

Converge remains at the forefront of the race to be the fastest internet service provider in the Philippines, emphasizing the company’s prominence in instant play, seamless playback, and optimization for 4K.

Awarded the *Best ISP Video Experience in the Philippines for the second half of 2022 during the Ookla® Speedtest Award™, Converge finished at the top with an overall 80.99 video score. The recognition solidifies the consumer-initiated scoring results of users’ video experiences during a six-month period.

Maximum video streaming and viewing experience calls for three important criteria: video starts as soon as the play button is pressed, video plays up to the end without stalling, and the video displays at the highest possible quality.

Ookla® had measurements for each of these important user criteria. Converge came out on top in all these video criteria among the internet service providers in the country.

“Being named the company with the Best ISP Video Experience solidifies our reputation of having the fastest broadband connectivity in the Philippines. The fact is, you don’t top all three key categories if you are not delivering a high-speed internet connection,” Converge Chief Operations Officer Jesus C. Romero said.

“Optimized user experience is important to us, so consumer-initiated ratings affirm all the efforts that we’ve done to improve our network to deliver fast, high-capacity connectivity.”

Converge emphasizes that their subscribers get more than what they are paying for because they make sure users enjoy consistent high speed, lowest latency (all data arrives swiftly) (12.51ms in 2022), and low jitter (2ms in 2022) (all data arrives in the right order) connectivity no matter their plan subscription.

These network assets make Converge the absolute choice for gamers, streamers, and high-volume data-sharing enterprises, with its Ookla® median speed clocking in at 94.39 Mbps and its top median speed reaching as high as 439.6 Mbps.

The company has consistently upgraded its bandwidth speed without increasing the subscription price. Converge initially offered 25 Mbps on its basic FiberX plan in 2018 before increasing the speed to 35 Mbps the following year.

Understanding the high-volume bandwidth demand during the pandemic, the ICT company increased its basic FiberX plan speed to 50 Mbps before doubling that speed to 100 Mbps during the first half of 2022.

Converge capped its year by offering another free double speed increase at the end of the year, making its basic FiberX plan run on 200 Mbps.

“Filipinos deserve the fastest internet at an affordable price; that’s why we’ve only increased our speed but never our prices. We always put our subscribers’ preferences and experiences first. Their satisfaction is our success. Being called a market disruptor is a badge of honor for us. We are always the first to give free speed bumps, and our competitors just follow suit,” Romero added.

Converge has been a perennial winner in Ookla®’s consumer-initiated ratings and awards, winning **Most Consistent Network across five major regions in the last quarter of 2021 and being crowned the ***Top Rated Fixed Network for the first half of 2022. The ICT company ended its 2022 run at the top of streaming giant Netflix’s Speed Index after Netflix users rated Converge as the best ISP for binge-watch streaming.

Corporate Guarantee (CG) has proven that they are the crème de la crème of quality management systems by earning their ISO 9001:2015 Certification. It’s like they’re saying, “We don’t just meet global standards, we exceed them!”

CG is not just any insurance company. They take customer service seriously and have made it the core of their operations. It’s like they’re saying, “We don’t just sell insurance, we sell peace of mind!”

As they expand their footprint across Luzon, they continue to make a mark in the non-life insurance space. CG knows that delivering quality customer service is key to their success, and they’re not afraid to show it.

“This recertification is a testament of our strong desire to sustain the quality service that Corporate Guarantee has known for the past 25 years. We take pride in this commitment and assure our stakeholders— clients, partners, and employees— that we uphold the highest standards in all our products and services worthy of the trust and confidence that they give us,” said CG Executive Director Carisa Laus.

The external auditors conducted a process-based review focusing on significant aspects, risks, and objectives required by the ISO standards. Information was gathered through interviews, observation of activities, and review of documentation and records.

Following the rigorous assessment and audit, it was concluded that CG has the mechanisms to ensure statutory, regulatory, and contractual compliance. Likewise, the company’s organizational efficiency in achieving specified objectives and identifying areas for improvement were highlighted.

CG’s system has demonstrated a state of development and maturity, which enabled the company to earn the quality management system recertification.

The scope of certification covered the provision of non-life insurance products and services (issuance of policies and settlement of claims) for motor, fire, casualty, marine, and bonds.

This is CG’s eighth ISO certification. The company earned its first ISO 9001:2000 in 2004, followed by ISO 9001:2008 in 2013. Their ISO 9001:2015 was first conferred in 2017 and was recertified in 2020.

CG is a member of the Laus Group of Companies that offers insurance coverage for motor, fire, casualty, cargo, and bonds. The company is widely recognized through its network and services in Pampanga, Metro Manila, Bulacan, Tarlac, La Union, and Ilocos Norte.

“The process Corporate Guarantee went through towards our certification required the whole team’s great deal of effort. Similar to our past auditing experiences, we give credit to our team’s collaborative and hardworking spirit,” said Lisset Laus-Velasco, Chairman of the LausGroup of Companies.

CG is one of six non-life insurance companies in the Philippines to be ISO-certified. The company exhibited a high standard in its quality management system, particularly in monitoring information on customer perception as to whether the organization has met customer needs and expectations.

The audit was conducted by SGS Philippines, Inc., a leading provider of certification, testing, verification, and inspection in the country.
