  • Cisco, DICT formally announce UGNAYAN 2030 partnership

Cisco, DICT formally announce UGNAYAN 2030 partnership

Cisco execs attend a series of engagements in PH

According to Cisco, hybrid work is now more than just a buzzword; it is now a business necessity and will continue to be so.Employees and employers alike have seen the numerous advantages of hybrid work in terms of productivity, work performance, and well-being over the past three years.

The goals of these engagements were to reaffirm Cisco’s commitment to empowering Filipino businesses, workforces, and communities and paving the way for an inclusive future in a hybrid work world for all.

“Hybrid work is a groundbreaking new norm that has shaken up convention for good,” said Tay.

Digital services have provided a lifeline for normality over the past few years. In fact, 85% of respondents surveyed globally say applications and digital services have become a critical part of how they go about their lives.

This will continue as 73% say they will still rely on digital services post-pandemic, according to Cisco AppDynamics’s App Attention Index.

An increasing number of connections between users and devices has expanded the cyber threat attack landscape. This has left businesses more susceptible to cyber threats, with Cisco’s Cybersecurity for SMEs in Asia-Pacific report revealing that more than half (57%) of Filippino Small and Medium Businesses suffered a cyber incident in 2021 and over a quarter (28%) sharing that this cost their business US$500,000 dollars or more.

Despite a heightened cyber threat landscape, 60% of employees in the Philippines prefer a hybrid work arrangement, compared to a fully remote or fully in-office work model. This trend has been driven by a significant uptick in productivity, quality of work and job knowledge.

It has also been accompanied by a rise in overall well-being. 90% say hybrid work has helped them save money thanks to the reduction of commuting, food, and entertainment costs, and 92% of employees in the Philippines are happier.

Hybrid work is clearly here to stay. According to Tay, more needs to be done from a technological point of view to enable all employees with a consistent and inclusive working experience.

Secure connectivity is key to ensure the long-term viability of hybrid work, with 73% of Filipino employees surveyed saying that regular connectivity issues may limit career advancement and 85% saying investing in cybersecurity solutions will be critical to hybrid work.

“The shift to hybrid work is broader than supporting more Filipino remote workers. Hybrid work is powered by the convergence of people, technology and places.”

Tay continued, “Hybrid work requires businesses to empower their people to be engaged and productive anywhere with scalable, future-ready technologies from collaboration to networking, security and cloud. It also needs to be coupled with an inclusive work experience that supports people’s strengths and preferred workstyles as well as a reimagination of what it means to connect people in a safe, secure and supportive workspace that is tailored to meet each of their individual needs.”

Getting hybrid work right brings the Philippines one step closer to digital inclusion and resilience. As the country transitions from a “response” to a “resilience” phase in its digital journey, Cisco is committed to powering an inclusive future for all, both businesses and individuals alike.

Cisco’s Country Digital Acceleration (CDA) program is a strategic partnership with government leadership, industry and academia to accelerate countries’ national digital agendas and create new value for a country, its industries, and its people. Today, CDA is present in 44 countries, with over 1,400 active or completed projects.

The CDA program in the Philippines takes the form of UGNAYAN 2030, which aims to build greater digital resilience and is designed to address the gaps the Philippines is facing including uneven access to ICT resources, weak cross-organization structure and adoption of technologies and limited expertise and manpower. Since its launch in 2020, UGNAYAN 2030 has completed numerous projects under key pillars of connectivity, collaboration and cybersecurity.

Today, Cisco and the Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) signed a Memorandum of Understanding to power DICT’s E-Government Masterplan under Cisco’s CDA “collaboration pillar”, with the aim of enabling a harmonized, interoperable, and integrated government ICT infrastructure.

“We are confident of this partnership. The initiative is set to enhance the government’s ability to collaborate more effectively and will help boost the government’s drive toward digital transformation,” DICT Secretary Ivan John Uy stated.

“We are delighted to further our long-standing relationship with DICT by providing them with the means to collaborate without compromising on security,” said Soriano-Nicart. “We look forward to harnessing our rich ecosystem and expertise in working with government agencies globally to help build a future-ready ecosystem in the Philippines through the deployment of innovative technology and solutions, starting with our secure collaboration portfolio to power hybrid work.”

As part of the partnership, Cisco will supply DICT with integrated security solutions and collaboration tools like Webex boards, room kits, and licenses.By reducing stress levels caused by traffic congestion and complex platforms, this aims to enhance inter-agency collaboration through digitization, increase efficiency and effectiveness of the public service, and enable public servants to concentrate on their mandates.

Margie Moran-Floirendo, President of the CCP, also gave her Congratulatory Speech for the groundbreaking event. “Through the years, Filipino and Korean people have been good companions to each other as they progress towards national and international development. The two countries share strong bilateral relations in politics, economics, and other social sectors.”

In the opening ceremony, guests were also treated with special performance from the featured Filipino and Korean dancers in the media art show, witnessing the harmonious movements presented in the video live on stage.

The guests were also dazzled with the performances of Madrigal Singers and the CEU Folk Dance Group as they perform Ikaw Ang Mahal Ko and especially Arirang, one of the most famous folk songs in Korea.

The highlight of the ceremony came when the guests were led to the front lawn as the media art show was unveiled for the first time at the grand exterior wall of the CCP Complex. Likewise, Filipinos around the vicinity and even those stuck in traffic were able to witness the unveiling of the media art show. It is as if time stood still as Donghaeng (동행) : Gunita At Pag-asa illuminated the Manila sky.

The media art show is currently showing at the Front lawn façade, CCP Complex until October 21, 2022 from 6PM to 9PM for free. The audience can also have the chance to win different prizes when visiting by joining contests in KCC’s official social media accounts.

  • FEU Tech sees the Philippines as the data science capital of Asia-Pacific

FEU Tech sees the Philippines as the data science capital of Asia-Pacific

The Philippine Institute for Developing Studies published a paper stating that not enough graduates from local schools possess the necessary skills for data science and analytics.

In a world increasingly rife with available data, arguably no field has gained more popularity in the last few years than data science. Businesses want data scientists because they turn confusing numbers and data into concrete, actionable insights essential for business strategy.

In fact, the US Bureau of Labor Statistics predicts data science will see more growth than any other field between now and 2029. The utilitarian nature of data science makes it easy to guess that the field’s growth will be a worldwide phenomenon.

The Far Eastern University Group of Schools’ tech-focused campus, FEU Tech, aims to make the Philippines the Asia-Pacific data science capital due to the rise of the field.

The Asia-Pacific is one of the fastest-growing markets for data science. One survey performed by global marketing intelligence firm IDC found that  3 in 4 enterprises in the Asia-Pacific in 2021 choose to keep investments in big data analytics (BDA) solutions or even expand, despite the economic consequences of the COVID-19 pandemic.

It’s worth noting the top ten industries responsible for big investments in data: banking and securities, communications, healthcare, manufacturing, government, insurance, retail, transportation, energy, and education round out the list. All of these industries anticipate a need to analyze data to craft new business solutions in the future.

The Philippines is no exception to the data science boom. In fact, the problem is that although there is demand for data analysts throughout the country the supply may not be enough.

FEU Tech looks to solve the country’s data scientist shortage by offering a comprehensive Bachelor of Science in Computer Science degree with a specialization in Data Science.

Not only will the program teach students to create complex software and programming, but the focus on data science will make sure students have a solid foundation in mathematics, statistics, and domain expertise.

Graduates of the program should be able to understand and glean insights from any data set, turning them into data-driven decision-makers.

“It isn’t just that we want to help our students find work after they graduate,” explained Senior Director for Computer Studies Rossana T. Adao.

“We want our graduates to drive high-value work, to have careers where they’ll play a key role in shaping the world of tomorrow. There’s no better way to accomplish that than to prepare them for a career in data science.”

Recently,  the FEU Tech campus was recognized in the latest rankings of the WURI (World’s Universities with Real Impact) Top Global Innovative Universities for 2022. The rankings compared global universities by measuring a university’s contributions to society and innovative approaches to education.

FEU Tech ranked alongside universities like MIT, Stanford, and Harvard and placed in four major categories: #19 in Progress during the Fourth Industrial Revolution, #30 in Entrepreneurial Spirit, #37 in Crisis Management, and #44 in Student Mobility and Openness.

FEU Tech’s WURI rankings are a testament to the institution’s capacity to craft relevant degree programs that prepare students for the world of tomorrow. The rankings also take into account FEU Tech’s other programs like BS Information Technology with specialization in Innovation and Business and BS Information Technology with specialization in Business Analytics.

“Our position in the WURI rankings is crucial in helping our data science graduates be the best in the Asia-Pacific,” said FEU Tech Senior Executive Director Dr. Benson Tan. “With a bit of hard work and perseverance, we can turn the Philippines into the data science capital of the region.”

To that end, FEU Tech commits itself to ensuring that its students will be ready to take on roles as data scientists. By supporting students taking undergraduate programs like Computer Science and Information Technology, the institution guarantees its future graduates will help fulfill future demand for data scientists.

Overall, FEU Tech hopes to kickstart a movement encouraging young Filipinos to explore opportunities in data science. While there is still a lot of work to do to ensure that the supply of data scientists in the country meets the demand, FEU Tech’s initiatives take the nation a step closer there every day.

“We believe that Filipinos can accomplish amazing things given the proper support and initiative,” concluded Dr. Tan. “I’m excited to see the world where Filipino data scientists are leading the way into the future.”
