Israeli developer Maor Shlomo has sold his six-month-old AI startup Base44 to Wix for $80 million in cash.
The vibe-coding platform, designed to help non-programmers build full applications using text prompts, grew to 250,000 users and generated $189,000 in profit last month.
Despite the hype of a “solo unicorn,” Shlomo wasn’t truly solo, employing eight people who will share $25 million in retention bonuses.
Base44 launched without outside funding and gained traction through Shlomo’s self-promotion on LinkedIn and Twitter.
The platform’s rapid rise caught the attention of AWS, which invited Shlomo to demo at a Tel Aviv event after he favored Claude over OpenAI’s models.
Wix, known for its no-code website tools, adds Base44 to expand its AI-powered software-building capabilities.
Shlomo, previously known for founding data analytics firm Explorium, cited scaling limitations as the reason for the sale.
The acquisition is being seen as a bargain compared to OpenAI’s $3 billion Windsurf purchase, making Wix’s buy look like a clearance sale at the unicorn store.
The move comes as Meta’s massive $14.3 billion investment for a 49% stake in Scale raises eyebrows among Scale’s other high-profile customers.
Microsoft is also allegedly rethinking its ties, while OpenAI reportedly reduced its reliance on Scale months ago.
Scale AI’s largest clients include generative AI companies, self-driving car firms, and the U.S. government, all seeking specialized data annotation services.
Google and Scale both declined to comment on their relationship, though Scale insists its business remains strong and independent.
The reported shake-up follows Meta’s appointment of Scale CEO Alexandr Wang to spearhead its “superintelligence” ambitions.
Meta is throwing $14.3 billion at Scale AI for a 49% stake in the startup, in what appears to be a wildly creative approach to not acquiring a company.
The deal values Scale at over $29 billion and showers shareholders and employees with massive liquidity through dividends, not a share buyout.
Scale’s CEO Alexandr Wang, who ditched MIT at 19 to build his AI data empire, will join Meta in what must surely be an unexpected plot twist in his dropout success story.
Early backer Accel is reportedly pocketing $2.5 billion from this circus of a transaction, as Meta somehow manages to hand over billions without a proper acquisition.
The company, last valued at $14 billion, seems to be selling itself piece by piece through this inventive dividend scheme, with regulators no doubt thrilled to unpack this one.
