Mining companies call for stronger support on responsible mining
The Philippine mining industry is urging stakeholders to enhance support for responsible mining practices, highlighting its potential to drive economic growth, support social development, and foster environmental stewardship at national and local levels.

Recently, the industry unveiled “Living with a Brighter Future,” a documentary showcasing collaborative efforts between mining companies, local communities, and government units across the Philippines.
In the documentary, the positive socio-economic impact and environmental sustainability initiatives of the mining industry are portrayed through the perspectives of company representatives and community members.
Notably, mining companies have significantly contributed to local communities through their Social Development and Management Program (SDMP), with PHP 20.3 billion allocated for 2002 to 2024. SDMPs have positively impacted over 1,160 barangays nationwide since 2002.
Moreover, the industry has allocated PHP 387.81 billion for environmental protection and enhancement programs as of December 2023, with an additional PHP 6.72 billion dedicated to rehabilitating decommissioned mines. By December 2023, the industry had planted over 50 million seedlings covering nearly 45 hectares of land, with an impressive 90% survival rate.
Through innovation and modern technologies, the mining sector is actively reducing its environmental footprint, showcasing its commitment to responsible stewardship of natural resources. In 2022 alone, the industry contributed PHP 170.1 billion to the Philippines’ GDP and employed over 212,000 individuals by 2023.
Recognizing the mining sector’s significance, the government has identified it as a crucial sector supporting the 4PH program, aiming to construct 1 million housing units annually until 2028.
The industry’s united commitment reflects a shared vision for a sustainable future where responsible mining plays a pivotal role in driving economic growth, fostering social development, and preserving the environment for future generations.
