Prada’s Tokyo Exhibition: Are Fitch and Trecartin Redefining Art?
Prada Aoyama will soon host the provocative exhibition “Lizzie Fitch | Ryan Trecartin: It Waives Back.”
Opening on October 24, 2024, and running until January 13, 2025, this marks the artists’ first solo show in Japan.
Located in Tokyo’s Minami Aoyama district, the exhibition will feature an expansive installation, two films, and a series of striking sculptures.
Fitch and Trecartin’s artistic journey began in rural Ohio in 2016, where they established a studio dedicated to exploration.
Their foundational work, “Whether Line,” premiered in Milan in 2019 and serves as a precursor to this latest endeavor.
The artists describe their Ohio project as a “life project,” emphasizing experimentation and collaboration.
In “It Waives Back,” they revisit extensive footage from “Whether Line,” delving into the concept of “version-hood,” where multiple truths coexist.
This exhibition further investigates identity and narrative fluidity, with characters embodying various states of being.
Fitch and Trecartin’s innovative approach merges gaming environments with social frameworks, challenging traditional artistic boundaries.
Since their meeting at the Rhode Island School of Design in 2000, their work has captivated audiences globally, including at the Venice Biennale and MoMA PS1.
