Apple Finally Realizes Its AI Cartoon Generator Was a Joke, Calls ChatGPT for Help

Apple is overhauling its much-mocked Image Playground app by integrating ChatGPT, following a year of lukewarm reviews and bizarre AI mishaps.
The update was announced at WWDC, positioning the app as a more serious contender in the AI image generation space after complaints of low-quality results like six-fingered hands and failure to render basic prompts.
The ChatGPT-powered version will allow users to create images in new styles including Oil Painting, Watercolor, Vector, Anime, Print, and a flexible “Any Style” option.
Previously, users were stuck with limited emoji-like outputs in Animation, Illustration, Sketch, and Genmoji formats, sparking confusion about the app’s purpose.
Apple promises user descriptions will be sent to ChatGPT only with explicit permission, in yet another privacy reassurance.
This move expands Apple’s growing reliance on OpenAI tools, already embedded into Siri and system-wide Writing Tools across its ecosystem.
The revamped Image Playground is set to launch with iOS 26 this fall, presumably with fewer fingers this time.
