JG Summit Says “I Do” (Again) to Meralco—Love is in the Air, or Maybe That’s Just Carbon

MPower, the retail electricity supply arm of Meralco, has renewed its electricity supply deal with the Gokongwei Group, because who needs variety when you’ve got “reliability”?
The new contract expands MPower’s grip to more facilities under JG Summit Holdings, including Robinsons Land Corporation, Cebu Pacific, Universal Robina, JG Summit Olefins, RL Commercial REIT, and Robinsons Supermarket.
This long-term love affair with a single power supplier began in 2013 and continues to thrive in the name of “nation-building” and “sustainability,” a term now conveniently interchangeable with corporate consolidation.
The deal reportedly includes a 60% renewable energy solution, because even massive conglomerates need to polish their green halos once in a while.
The renewed agreement conveniently cements Meralco’s relevance to nearly every essential industry, from food to fuel to your favorite grocery aisle, all while claiming it’s for the “Filipino community.”
Apparently, the best way to “empower” communities these days is to centralize their electricity supply under one giant corporation.
