St. Luke’s Establishes New Standard in Structural Heart Care

St. Luke’s Medical Center – Global City has completed over 300 Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement procedures, cementing its position as a leading provider of minimally invasive cardiac care in the Philippines.
The milestone reflects more than a decade of program development since the hospital performed the country’s first percutaneous TAVR in 2012 on an 86-year-old patient. The program is led by Dr. Fabio Enrique Posas, a pioneer in structural heart interventions whose work has been cited in regional cardiovascular research.
TAVR addresses severe aortic stenosis by replacing the heart’s aortic valve through a catheter, typically inserted via the groin or wrist. The approach avoids open-heart surgery, reduces recovery time, and expands treatment to high-risk and elderly patients. Studies from international cardiology journals confirm TAVR’s safety and efficacy for patients ineligible for traditional surgery.
The completion of the 300th case coincides with the launch of St. Luke’s Center for Structural Heart and Vascular Interventions, a specialized facility integrating imaging, catheterization, and patient care systems. The center follows protocols recommended by the Society for Cardiovascular Angiography and Interventions to optimize outcomes and procedural efficiency.
Under Dr. Posas, a multidisciplinary team of surgeons, anesthesiologists, nurses, and imaging specialists coordinates patient care from diagnosis to post-procedure follow-up. Health systems experts note that such integrated models improve procedural success and patient satisfaction.
Beyond TAVR, the center plans to expand into other minimally invasive cardiac procedures, aligning with global trends in structural heart interventions and value-based care.
St. Luke’s President and CEO Dr. Dennis P. Serrano highlighted that the program reduces the need for Filipinos to travel abroad for advanced cardiac treatment, a factor increasingly relevant in the regional healthcare market.
The milestone positions St. Luke’s competitively among Southeast Asian cardiac centers and signals potential for collaboration with medical device manufacturers and research institutions focused on structural heart innovation.
