Zyxel unleashes WiFi 7 bombshell that could shake up the ISP industry

Zyxel Networks on March 10 announced that four of its WiFi 7 access points are now OpenWiFi-ready, giving internet service providers a new option to deploy open, interoperable and customizable wireless services without relying on proprietary ecosystems.
The company said the move is aimed at helping ISPs deliver business-grade WiFi 7 performance to subscribers while improving flexibility, scalability and long-term control over their service architecture.
Zyxel said growing demand for faster and more reliable connectivity has left many service providers limited by closed vendor systems that restrict interoperability and slow expansion.
The newly integrated OpenWiFi-ready devices are designed to address those concerns by combining WiFi 7 capabilities with open networking standards that allow providers to maintain greater control over how their networks are built and managed.
The lineup includes the NWA50BE, NWA55BE, NWA130BE and NWA210BE, with indoor and outdoor deployment options that range from entry-level dual-radio BE5100 to triple-radio BE12300 configurations.
Zyxel said the four models are intended for varied environments such as shared housing, co-working spaces, offices and hotels, giving service providers more flexibility in designing wireless coverage for different use cases.
The company also highlighted what it described as an industry-first RF-first design, which is intended to reduce interference from adjacent channels and nearby 4G and 5G mobile networks in high-density environments.
Zyxel said the rectangular design of the NWA210BE and NWA130BE creates more internal space for improved antenna isolation, which helps deliver better signal-to-noise ratios and more stable wireless coverage.
The company said adopting standardized WiFi hardware can help ISPs reduce vendor dependence by allowing them to combine interoperable hardware and software from multiple suppliers.
It added that this approach can lower capital expenditures for large-scale rollouts and make future expansion easier without requiring costly and disruptive infrastructure replacements.
Zyxel also said the open-source and community-driven nature of OpenWiFi can speed up innovation by allowing providers to customize wireless services more deeply and develop more competitive offerings.
Southeast Asia regional head Gary Chen said the expansion is meant to give ISPs the ability to innovate more freely while still meeting subscriber expectations for speed, reliability and performance.
He said making the WiFi 7 access points OpenWiFi-ready is intended to provide service providers with greater openness, flexibility and scalability as they expand their businesses.
Zyxel said select access point models in its broader portfolio will also support OpenWrt, an open-source embedded operating system that offers additional customization options for network operators.

Zyxel Networks describes itself as a provider of secure, AI-powered cloud networking solutions for small and medium-sized businesses and enterprise edge environments.
