Barangay Galalan in Pangil, Laguna, ended a decade-long wait for dedicated emergency medical transport following the formal handover of a ₱1.6-million ambulance by LG Electronics Philippines.
The vehicle, awarded under the “Life Saver on Wheels” project, emerged as the winning entry in the 2026 LG Ambassador Challenge. The turnover ceremony took place on September 22 at LG Electronics Philippines headquarters, bringing vital emergency response equipment to a mountain community that previously lacked basic transport infrastructure.
Prior to the acquisition, residents of the remote barangay relied on motorcycles, private vehicles, bicycles, garbage trucks, and manual carrying along mountain trails to transport patients to medical facilities located approximately 20 kilometers away.
Overcoming Geographic Barriers to Emergency Care
In remote areas such as Sitio Gisgis, one of Galalan’s most isolated settlements, health emergencies required carrying patients along a walking trail using a duyan—a traditional hammock-like sling—for up to 45 minutes to an hour before reaching the nearest road.
The newly donated ambulance will operate directly from the barangay hall under local management. Operational logistics include:
- Stationing and Operations: Stationed at the barangay hall under the oversight of designated ambulance manager Pastor Ramil B. Repolido.
- Staffing and Support: Driven by personnel from the barangay health office, with emergency first-aid response coordinated alongside the Rural Health Center.
- Infrastructure: Construction of a dedicated, accessible parking facility at the barangay hall to ensure rapid dispatch upon receiving emergency calls.
Corporate Social Responsibility and Community Selection
The LG Ambassador Challenge, active in the Philippines since 2019, focused its 2026 cycle on medical aid and education, with a specific focus on maternal and child welfare.
“If you want to support a long-term cause, an ambulance is exactly that. Emergency response is something a community needs for the long run, and that’s a priority for LG,” said Nakhyun Seong, Managing Director of LG Electronics Philippines.
“At the heart of LG, there is warmth and understanding,” Seong added. “That’s what we want to bring to people, by helping and by supporting those who can improve innovation in their own communities.”
Seong emphasized that community commitment and sustainability were deciding factors in selecting Galalan’s entry. He noted that the utility of the emergency vehicle is expected to extend to neighboring communities experiencing similar healthcare access challenges.
Community Response and Future Outlook
For local leaders and residents who organized the project proposal, the vehicle resolves an urgent, long-standing public safety vulnerability.
“No ambulance trips are made there,” Repolido said regarding historical transport options. “Most of the time, we see motorcycles, cars, or bicycles and even a garbage truck. That’s what the patients are forced to use.”
Repolido noted the community’s extended efforts during the selection process: “We are very thankful to LG because it has been an instrument for us to grow what we have been praying for for a long time. We believe this is God’s will.”
Felix Arbol Jr., a Barangay Council member and church elder who mobilized community support, confirmed local readiness to deploy the resource immediately.
“If we have an ambulance, we are willing to go to the hospital at any time, any day, as long as it’s an emergency,” Arbol said. “We don’t have to worry about transportation anymore.”
Following the completion of the Galalan turnover, LG Electronics Philippines confirmed its ongoing corporate social responsibility efforts will remain focused on healthcare, education, and child welfare initiatives across the country.
“Moving forward, our priorities remain children, education, and healthcare,” Seong said.
