Coursera: Philippines Leads GenAI Growth in Southeast Asia but Women Remain Underrepresented

Coursera has launched its “Closing the Gender Gap in GenAI Skills” playbook, offering strategies to address the gender disparity in Generative AI (GenAI) skills.

The Philippines leads Southeast Asia in GenAI adoption and ranks among the top 10 globally for women’s enrollment, yet women make up only 38% of GenAI learners despite representing 51% of the country’s total learners.

Filipino women’s GenAI enrollments surged by 818% in 2024, outpacing the 765% growth among men, showing strong potential to close the gap.

Coursera’s data highlights key barriers limiting women’s participation in GenAI, including confidence gaps, time constraints, unclear career pathways, and a lack of female role models in AI leadership.

The playbook proposes targeted strategies, like promoting early STEM education, creating practical AI learning programs, and increasing women educators and mentors to sustain long-term engagement.

Coursera emphasizes that empowering more women in GenAI is crucial to ensuring diverse perspectives shape the future of AI.
