In celebration of World Children’s Month this November, Smile Train and REX Education Foundation, Inc. (REFI) are joining forces to advance cleft awareness, inclusive education, and learning opportunities that empower children and families born with cleft.
At the center of the partnership is the development of a children’s storybook inspired by the real-life experiences of children with cleft. Through age-appropriate storytelling, the initiative aims to help young readers better understand cleft conditions, challenge misconceptions, and appreciate individual differences.
The collaboration recognizes the role of education in shaping how children understand and interact with others. By incorporating cleft awareness into educational materials and learning activities, the partnership seeks to encourage empathy and help create environments where children feel included, valued, and supported.
“We share a commitment to improving the lives of Filipino children. Through this partnership with Smile Train Philippines, we aim to reach more children, uplift families, and create opportunities for healthier, brighter futures. We believe that every child deserves the opportunity to live a healthy, meaningful, and fulfilling life.” said Atty. Dominador Buhain, Chairman of REX Education Foundation Inc.
Beyond the storybook, the partnership will implement complementary educational programs to extend its reach across schools and communities.
Through Edukampyon PAHINA, mobile library activities, storytelling sessions, and educational programs will introduce cleft awareness to young learners. Meanwhile, Edukampyon REFine aims to equip teachers with the knowledge and skills to better support learners with cleft and respond to their educational needs.
The partnership also includes the development of Information, Education, and Communication (IEC) materials, such as brochures, posters, and digital resources, to make reliable cleft-related information more accessible to families, educators, and communities.
Another valuable component of the partnership is TechVoc SEED, which seeks to explore skills training and livelihood opportunities for individuals with cleft and their families, extending the collaboration’s focus to skills development and economic empowerment.
Under the partnership, REFI will lead program implementation and the development of learning materials, while Smile Train will provide technical expertise and guidance to ensure the accuracy of cleft-related information. The collaboration also builds on Smile Train’s participation in learning hub activities and its ongoing efforts to expand cleft awareness beyond healthcare settings.
“Every child deserves the opportunity to learn, grow, and reach their full potential, regardless of their circumstances. For children with cleft, greater awareness and understanding can help create more supportive environments where they feel accepted and empowered. Through our partnership with REX Education Foundation, Inc., we aim to bring cleft awareness beyond healthcare settings and into classrooms and communities, reminding children that their differences do not define their possibilities,” shared John Manuel Flores, Smile Train Area Director for Southeast Asia.
Smile Train and REX Education Foundation, Inc. emphasize the importance of inclusive education in empowering children beyond the classroom. By combining their expertise in education and cleft care, the partnership aims to support children with cleft, build confidence, embrace diversity, and access opportunities to learn and thrive.
This World Children’s Month, let us turn awareness into action by ensuring every child feels valued, has access to learning opportunities, and is empowered to succeed.
