For decades, data center networks were judged by one primary metric: throughput. The race was all about faster ports, higher switching capacities, and raw bandwidth.
But as modern workloads evolved—from cloud-native applications and container orchestration to AI and real-time analytics—speed alone became an incomplete measure of performance.
Today, programmable switches and custom ASICs (Application-Specific Integrated Circuits) are transforming what performance means in a data center.
Instead of just moving packets faster, these systems bring agility, visibility, and intelligence directly into the fabric of the network. The data plane is no longer passive; it’s programmable, adaptive, and context-aware.
From Fixed Function to Programmable Data Planes
Traditional ASICs were powerful but rigid. Designed for specific protocols such as Ethernet, MPLS, or IPv4/IPv6, they processed packets at scale but offered little flexibility. When new requirements like VXLAN overlays or SRv6 emerged, operators had to wait years for silicon refresh cycles.
That rigidity clashed with the pace of digital transformation. Hyperscalers, cloud providers, and enterprises needed to implement new features in weeks, not years.
The solution came in the form of programmable data planes. Silicon like Intel’s Barefoot Tofino introduced P4 programmability—a language that allows operators to define how packets are parsed, processed, and forwarded.
Broadcom’s Jericho and Tomahawk series added programmability features of their own, while NVIDIA’s Spectrum family specialized in AI workloads and RDMA acceleration.
With programmable pipelines, data centers can add new encapsulations, telemetry functions, or even custom load-balancing logic without swapping hardware. This flexibility shifts the power dynamic: hardware no longer dictates what’s possible—software does.
Why Performance Means More Than Bandwidth
Programmable ASICs redefine performance by enabling intelligence inside the switch itself. One of the most powerful features is In-Band Network Telemetry (INT), which allows real-time visibility into packet flow.
Instead of relying on external monitoring tools, operators can measure hop-by-hop latency, detect congestion, and identify microbursts as they happen—all without leaving the data plane.
This capability is critical in environments where microseconds matter. In financial services, where algorithmic trading depends on ultra-low latency, even a few dropped packets can result in lost revenue. In AI/ML training clusters, synchronization traffic is extremely sensitive to jitter; small variations in network performance can stall jobs running across thousands of GPUs.
Programmable switches don’t just observe these issues; they can react to them. By enabling congestion-aware routing, dynamic load balancing, or flow-based prioritization, they transform the network into an active participant in workload optimization.
The Bandwidth Arms Race: 400G, 800G, and Beyond
While programmability adds intelligence, bandwidth growth hasn’t slowed. Hyperscalers are rapidly upgrading to 400G and 800G to keep pace with data-intensive workloads.
Broadcom’s Tomahawk 5 ASIC now offers 51.2 Tbps of switching capacity, supporting 64x800G ports per chassis. NVIDIA’s Spectrum-4 is tuned for AI clusters, supporting RoCEv2 for efficient GPU-to-GPU communication at terabit speeds.
But scaling bandwidth isn’t just about stacking more ports. As data rates climb, the bottleneck shifts to electrical signaling. This is where co-packaged optics (CPO) enter the picture, integrating optics directly with silicon to minimize signal degradation, reduce power consumption, and lower latency per bit.
Hyperscalers like Microsoft and Google are piloting CPO for next-generation clusters, particularly for AI workloads requiring petabit-scale fabrics.
Merchant Silicon vs. Custom ASICs
Another fault line in the data center networking world is the debate between merchant silicon and custom ASICs. Merchant chips from Broadcom, Intel, and Innovium (now Marvell) dominate the industry, powering everything from white-box switches to hyperscale deployments. They benefit from economies of scale, consistent roadmaps, and broad software support.
By contrast, companies like Cisco and Juniper continue to invest in proprietary silicon tailored to their platforms. Cisco’s Silicon One, for instance, promises a unified architecture for routing and switching, optimized for both service provider backbones and hyperscale data centers. The trade-off is tighter vertical integration at the cost of flexibility.
Most operators today run a mix: merchant silicon for scale-out leaf-spine fabrics, custom ASICs where differentiated features like security, deep buffers, or specific telemetry are required.
Energy Efficiency and Sustainability Considerations
As networks scale, power efficiency has become a first-class concern. Every generation of ASICs consumes more power per chip, but hyperscalers demand a lower watts-per-gigabit ratio. Programmable switches offer opportunities for energy optimization by dynamically adjusting forwarding logic, minimizing wasted cycles, and even consolidating workloads onto fewer devices.
This is especially relevant as AI workloads expand. A single large training run can consume megawatts of power. Networks must not only deliver bandwidth but do so in a way that minimizes cooling requirements and total cost of ownership. ASIC vendors are racing to strike the balance between programmability and efficiency, with designs focused on reducing pJ/bit (picojoules per bit).

Programmable ASICs will continue to evolve alongside higher port speeds, with co-packaged optics and silicon photonics reshaping the physical limits. More importantly, programmability ensures that whatever new protocols or workloads emerge—whether it’s metaverse-scale VR, quantum networking, or edge AI—the network can adapt without a forklift upgrade.
By moving beyond throughput as the sole metric of performance, programmable switches have turned data center fabrics into agile, intelligent systems. In the era of hyperscale, that agility isn’t a luxury—it’s survival.
The power of movement took center stage in Thailand as ASICS Asia hosted its second Regional Women’s Retreat at RXV Wellness Village from July 21 to 24. Over 35 women representing different nationalities, ethnicities, and body types came together to celebrate the harmony of body and mind through movement, mindfulness, and creativity.
Building on the momentum of the inaugural 2023 retreat that highlighted the gender exercise gap, this year’s edition went deeper into the importance of community and empowerment.
Here are eight highlights that made the 2025 ASICS Regional Women’s Retreat an unforgettable experience.
A sunrise run set the perfect tone The retreat opened with energy and optimism through a sunrise run led by ASICS Global Frontrunners Ania Gabb, Nina Ashton, and Prakriti Dutta, joined by ultra-marathoner Natalie Dau. The run was more than just exercise; it symbolized fresh beginnings and reminded participants how physical activity supports mental wellbeing. For many women, starting the day this way became a metaphor for moving forward with confidence.
Ceremonies that encouraged letting go A standout feature of the retreat was the ‘Let Go’ Ceremony, where participants symbolically released self-doubt and limiting beliefs. This was paired with the Flower Crystal Mandala, which provided a meditative environment for emotional clarity. These rituals weren’t just symbolic—they created space for reflection, renewal, and the release of mental baggage that often holds women back from prioritizing themselves.
Team challenges that built resilience The retreat emphasized that movement is not only about the individual but also about the collective. Activities such as high-5 push-ups, team flag-making, and Karuta Tori challenged women to collaborate, support one another, and celebrate group achievement. By combining physical activity with teamwork, participants learned how community fosters resilience and mental strength.
Healing through water therapy To balance out the intensity of physical challenges, the retreat introduced a calming Hydrotherapy session. Guests enjoyed time to relax, float, and reconnect with themselves in the water. This element of the program highlighted the importance of recovery, showing how rest and stillness are as vital as action when striving for a sound body and sound mind.
Creativity as a form of mindfulness Beyond movement and wellness, the retreat spotlighted art and sustainability through workshops like Furoshiki eco-print and Sashiko Japanese embroidery. These sessions encouraged women to embrace creativity while also practicing mindfulness. By focusing on handmade crafts and traditional art forms, participants gained a sense of grounding and discovered beauty in imperfection.

Participants began the retreat with a sunrise run led by ASICS’ Global Frontrunners – Ania Gabb, Nina Ashton and Prakriti Dutta, as well as ultra-marathoner Natalie Dau, setting a positive tone for the day and emphasizing the importance of movement in achieving mental wellbeing.
For a Sound Mind, the retreat opened with ‘Let Go’ Ceremony and the Flower Crystal Mandala ceremonies, which support emotional release, promote healing, and deepen self-awareness.
The ‘Let Go’ Ceremony invites participants to symbolically release self-doubt and limiting beliefs, while embracing a sense of renewal and personal growth. The Crystal Mandala offered a meditative space for guests to tap into their intuition, clarify their thoughts and emotions, and connect with their inner selves, fostering deeper self-awareness and insight.
For a Sound Body, the retreat also saw a series of team challenges including high-5 push-ups, team flag making as well as Karuta Tori; these activities fostered camaraderie amongst the guests and highlighted the value of community in fostering mental resilience. At this scale, traditional Layer 2 and Layer 3 boundaries have hit their limits, forcing a rethinking of network design.
Enter EVPN-VXLAN, spine-leaf architectures, and fabric-level automation—the technologies quietly defining hyperscale networking in 2025.
Why Spine-Leaf Became the Default Design
The shift from three-tier architectures (core, aggregation, access) to spine-leaf wasn’t just about fashion—it was necessity. In hyperscale environments, east-west traffic dominates, as data moves laterally between servers, clusters, and containers. Spine-leaf ensures every leaf switch connects to every spine, guaranteeing predictable latency and high-bandwidth paths.
A key advantage is scalability. Adding more leaf switches means simply adding more spines in parallel. Facebook, AWS, and Google all pushed this model in the last decade, but today even mid-size enterprises are adopting spine-leaf to future-proof growth.
EVPN-VXLAN: The Fabric Overlay That Changed the Game
Virtual Extensible LAN (VXLAN) with Ethernet VPN (EVPN) has emerged as the de facto overlay for modern data centers. VXLAN’s ability to encapsulate Layer 2 traffic over a Layer 3 underlay solved VLAN scaling limits (up to 16 million segments compared to VLAN’s 4,096). Meanwhile, EVPN adds efficient, standards-based control plane learning using BGP, eliminating flood-and-learn headaches.
This pairing allows operators to extend workloads seamlessly across racks, pods, and even sites. For enterprises running hybrid cloud, it also opens the door to multi-tenancy and workload mobility without brittle manual configurations.
The Path to Hyperscale: Where Fabrics Are Headed
Hyperscale operators are pushing fabrics far beyond simple overlays. Three emerging trends stand out:
EVPN-VXLAN with SRv6: Segment Routing v6 is being combined with EVPN overlays to simplify traffic engineering and improve telemetry at scale.
Programmable data planes: Switches powered by merchant silicon like Broadcom Trident and Barefoot Tofino allow fine-grained telemetry, congestion-aware routing, and security enforcement at line rate.
Automation as a prerequisite: Intent-based networking (Cisco’s NDFC, Arista’s CloudVision, Juniper’s Apstra) has moved from optional to mandatory. Managing thousands of leaf-spine nodes is impossible without fabric-wide automation.
