Funding the world’s insatiable demand for AI computing infrastructure will require $6 trillion in annual revenue by 2031, according to Bain & Company’s 7th annual Global Technology Report.

Because existing productivity applications cannot bridge this financial gap alone, tech sector sustainability depends on developing entirely new categories of innovation.

The report estimates that current AI applications—including consumer subscriptions, digital advertising, and enterprise software across sales, marketing, and IT—will generate between $1.2 trillion and $1.8 trillion in revenue. To cover the remaining $4.2 trillion gap, the market must rely on four emerging innovation categories:

  • Ad-Supported AI Models: Model providers replacing traditional search engines and integrating direct advertising streams.
  • Autonomous Systems: Commercial rollout of self-driving automobiles, trucks, delivery drones, and advanced industrial automation.
  • Physical AI and Robotics: Enterprise deployment of digital twins, high-fidelity simulations, and robotics across manufacturing and R&D.
  • Unexplored Frontier Markets: Brand-new product categories powered by abundant machine intelligence, including AI-driven drug discovery, mental health tools, and energy generation.

“The debate today is fixated on employee productivity. The economics of AI infrastructure demand trillions in new revenue beyond productivity gains. What the industry needs is a wave of innovation that will dwarf what mobile and cloud unlocked,” said David Crawford, chairman of Bain’s global Technology practice.

Hardware Boom and Supply Chain Shifts

The massive demand for computing power has triggered a sharp reversal in technology market valuations. Hardware and semiconductor stocks grew at a 24% compound annual rate from 2020 to 2026, vastly outperforming software stock growth of 6%.

Rapid expansion in high-bandwidth memory (HBM), advanced packaging, and application-specific integrated circuits (ASICs) is driving this boom. As hyperscalers and AI-native firms design custom accelerators tailored to grand-scale, homogeneous workloads, custom silicon is taking over a larger share of the data center market.

However, heavily prioritizing HBM capacity has squeezed investment in standard DRAM, double data rate memory, and NAND flash. This imbalance threatens to trigger memory shortages and increase retail prices for smartphones and PCs. At the same time, natural disasters, geopolitical tensions, and export controls are forcing foundries and tech firms to diversify manufacturing across multiple geographic locations.

“This is a dynamic time for players in the hardware sector. Supply chain and procurement strategies are increasingly sources of competitive advantage as investing in supplier capacity, long-term agreements, equity investments in the supply chain, and multi-vendor, multi-geography sourcing are now very high on the C-suite agenda. Also, product strategy choices are changing. The old model where one vendor innovates and sells to everyone else is changing, and a wave of verticalization and semi-custom design are becoming more prevalent,” said Anne Hoecker, global head of Bain’s Technology practice.

Cybersecurity Threats Accelerate Under AI

AI deployment has drastically reduced attack execution times for cybercriminals, shrinking typical attack windows from four weeks down to just 18 hours. The uncontrolled expansion of AI agents inside enterprise systems has further magnified these vulnerabilities.

To counter these risks, leading organizations are overhauling their security operations:

  • Increased Remediation Budgets: Industry leaders are expanding security budgets by double-digit percentages.
  • Resource Reallocation: Security teams are shifting 20% to 25% of human resources exclusively to resolving alerts generated by AI-powered scans.
  • Focus on High-Risk Vectors: Security teams are prioritizing vulnerabilities hidden within legacy platforms, network layers, and third-party software-as-a-service (SaaS) integrations.

Overcoming Bottlenecks in AI Adoption

Company absorption speed—the velocity at which an enterprise can successfully integrate AI—has emerged as a major competitive differentiator. Leading AI research labs are committing over $9.75 billion into forward-deployed engineering teams to help corporate clients integrate tools faster.

Despite falling token costs and expanding model options, Bain expects the market to segment into specialized model tiers rather than suffer total commoditization.

“We see the more likely scenario as a continuum of frontier and mature models. New and unproven cases will initially favor frontier models, then likely migrate to lower-cost alternatives as the cases mature. Frontier providers will push toward more fundamental challenges, capturing value where superior intelligence matters most. Meanwhile, lower cost, specialized, and optimized models will efficiently serve more common tasks, providing the services and support that enterprise customers need,” said Crawford.

“The industry end state is far from settled. We are likely headed into a segmentation between frontier models and trailing models or an expanding definition of models rather than a classic commoditization pattern.”

A companion survey of 293 senior technology executives highlights a growing gap between expectations and current productivity gains. While executives anticipate a 148% improvement in software release speeds and a 95% boost in developer productivity over the next two years, current real-world efficiency gains sit between 20% and 27%.

Because automated coding pushes operational bottlenecks downstream into code review, governance, and quality assurance, leading tech organizations are restructuring knowledge bases for AI consumption, embedding automated trust verification directly into workflows, and managing the entire software development lifecycle as an evolving, continuous product.
