Norwegian national suspected as Chinese spy
In a significant development, Norway’s domestic security agency has arrested a Norwegian citizen on suspicion of engaging in espionage activities that could benefit China.
The suspect, whose identity remains undisclosed, was apprehended at Oslo’s international airport upon returning from a trip to China.
The Norwegian Police Security Service (PST) has emphasized the gravity of the case, indicating that the suspect is believed to have possessed sensitive information intended for Chinese intelligence. If convicted, the individual could face a lengthy prison sentence.
The suspect’s legal representative, Marius Dietrichson, has stated that his client denies the allegations and plans to plead innocent. However, the PST has refrained from providing extensive details about the case, citing the preliminary and sensitive nature of the investigation.
This arrest comes amid growing concerns about China’s intelligence activities in Norway. In its annual threat assessment, the Norwegian security service identified China as a “significant intelligence threat in 2024”. The assessment cites the deteriorating relationship between China and the West, China’s desire for greater control over supply chains, and its strategic interests in the Arctic as contributing factors.
Norway has previously encountered instances of suspected foreign espionage within its borders. In 2022, an academic affiliated with the Arctic University of Norway in Tromsø, who had entered the country under a Brazilian identity, was arrested on suspicion of spying for a Russian intelligence agency.
The ongoing tensions between China and the West, as well as Norway’s own diplomatic history with China, have added to the complexity of this case. Past diplomatic strains, including a trade deal suspension and import restrictions on Norwegian salmon, have colored the relationship between Oslo and Beijing.
As the investigation progresses, the Norwegian authorities are expected to provide further updates on the case. The legal proceedings for the suspect are scheduled to commence with a court hearing in Oslo on Tuesday.
