Exclusive Interview: Corteva Agriscience's Udaya Bhaskar Vemuri | Why AI is turning cybersecurity into a speed and scale arms race

Cybersecurity is undergoing a fundamental shift as artificial intelligence reshapes the balance of power between digital defenders and malicious actors.

While AI enables security teams to process massive datasets and automate routine operations, it simultaneously grants attackers the tools to scale phishing, malware generation, and social engineering at unprecedented speeds.

“Artificial intelligence is changing cybersecurity for both defenders and attackers,” said Udaya Bhaskar Vemuri, Senior Application Security Analyst at Corteva Agriscience.

“For defenders, AI can quickly analyze large amounts of security data, identify unusual activity, prioritize alerts, and help security teams respond faster. It also helps automate repetitive tasks such as vulnerability analysis, code reviews, and threat detection, allowing analysts to focus on more complex work.”

However, the rapid adoption of AI introduces severe risks if implemented without human guardrails.

“The biggest opportunity is improving efficiency without sacrificing security,” Vemuri stated. “The biggest risk is relying too heavily on AI without proper oversight. AI systems can make mistakes, produce inaccurate recommendations, or be manipulated through techniques such as prompt injection or data poisoning. Organizations should treat AI as a decision-support tool rather than a replacement for experienced security professionals.”

The Limits of AI Automation

While machine learning algorithms outperform human analysts at pattern recognition, log processing, and rapid threat sorting, critical high-stakes choices still require human intervention.

Operations requiring human oversight include:

  • Incident response and mitigation execution
  • Risk acceptance and liability evaluation
  • Core security architecture design
  • Investigations with legal, regulatory, or broad business impact

“The best results come from combining both,” Vemuri explained. “AI handles speed and scale, while people provide judgment, validation, and accountability.”

The Next Decade of Cyber Warfare

Over the next ten years, autonomous agents and generative models will automate both defensive operations and offensive reconnaissance. As attacks become more sophisticated, the primary defense challenge will shift from raw technical capability to systemic reliability.

“The long-term challenge will not simply be building more advanced AI, but building trustworthy AI,” Vemuri said. “Organizations will need strong governance, continuous monitoring, and human oversight to ensure AI systems remain reliable, secure, and aligned with business goals.”

Ethical, Legal, and Privacy Implications

Deploying AI in security environments requires processing vast volumes of personal and corporate data. Without strict guardrails, organizations risk data exposure, algorithmic bias, and unexplainable automated decisions.

“Security and privacy should be viewed as complementary goals rather than competing priorities,” Vemuri noted. “Strong governance, regular security testing, and responsible use of AI help organizations protect both their systems and the people who rely on them.”

Building an AI-Powered Security Strategy

To remain resilient against evolving threats, enterprise AI integration must be built on top of established security fundamentals rather than replacing them.

Core requirements for a modern strategy include:

  • Identity and access management combined with Zero Trust principles
  • Automated vulnerability management and secure software development
  • Comprehensive AI governance defining system testing, updates, and oversight
  • Continuous workforce training and cross-departmental collaboration

“Long-term success depends on investing in people as much as technology,” Vemuri emphasized. “AI will continue to evolve, but organizations that combine strong governance with secure engineering practices will be better prepared to adapt to future threats.”
