Pru Life UK, in partnership with the Bangsamoro Transition Authority (BTA) Parliament Secretariat, held a session to address the mental health impact of climate change on communities in the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region.
Extreme weather events, including typhoons, floods, and droughts, continue to threaten 60% of the Philippines’ land area and 74% of its population.
These climate-induced disasters disproportionately affect rural and farming communities, disrupting livelihoods, destroying homes, and exacerbating mental health concerns.
The session, attended by 50 BTA staff, explored the intersection of climate change and mental health, emphasizing the need for resilience and practical interventions.
Participants gained insights into the psychological toll of extreme weather and learned strategies to help communities manage climate-related stress.
Dr. John Jamir Benzon Aruta, Associate Professor of Psychology at De La Salle University, shared expert insights on how climate change contributes to mental health challenges, highlighting the urgency of psychological and community-based interventions.
Attendees also participated in discussions on real-life experiences and strategies to integrate mental health considerations into local policies and programs.
The event underscored the importance of multi-sectoral collaboration in tackling climate change and public health challenges.
