Apple has officially entered the foldable smartphone market with the introduction of the iPhone Duo, a dual-display device featuring a 7.6-inch inner screen and a 5.4-inch outer display.
Starting at $1,999, the device combines a polished grade 5 titanium frame with a custom precision hinge mechanism, driven by the new 2-nanometer A20 Pro chip. Pre-orders open on Friday, October 16, with full retail availability beginning Friday, October 23.
“iPhone Duo is the most transformational change to iPhone since the original. With an entirely new design and intuitive experiences, it shows what’s possible when hardware and software are engineered together and redefines what it means to use a foldable phone,” said John Ternus, Apple’s CEO.
“With the largest display ever on iPhone that still fits easily in your pocket, combined with the power of A20 Pro, iPhone Duo helps you stay more immersed and productive wherever you go, whether you’re enjoying content, multitasking across apps, or gaming.”
Dual-Display Architecture and Hardware Design
When opened, the iPhone Duo exposes a 7.6-inch inner Super Retina XDR screen finished with a nano-texture surface that minimizes glare and crease visibility. A new FaceTime camera is housed beneath the inner display, keeping the viewing area uninterrupted.
When closed, the device relies on a 5.4-inch outer Super Retina XDR display that delivers 90 percent of the screen area of an iPhone 18 Pro. Both displays share identical aspect ratios to ensure visual continuity when switching between screens, and both support ProMotion, Always On, and a peak outdoor brightness of 3,000 nits. Later this year, the device will gain support for the USB-C Apple Pencil across both displays.
The mechanical design incorporates several specialized hardware elements:
- Precision Hinge: Constructed from over 100 components using a 3D-printed hinge cover with a micro-blasted finish, supported by internal structure ribs and ceramic fiber inserts.
- Display Durability: Incorporates high-strength glass layers joined by custom adhesives that glide past each other during folding, backed by a titanium support plate and a custom polymer cover layer with 40 percent higher stiffness than standard materials.
- Exterior Protection: Utilizes Ceramic Shield on the rear and Ceramic Shield 2 on the outer display, providing three times the scratch resistance of previous generations, alongside an IP68 dust- and water-resistance rating.
- Biometrics and Controls: Integrates Touch ID into the side power button, supports Apple Watch unlocking, and includes a dedicated Camera Control button for rapid shutter launch and Siri Camera mode.
A20 Pro Silicon and Thermal Engineering
The iPhone Duo is powered by the A20 Pro chip, manufactured on a 2-nanometer process technology. The processor features a 6-core CPU that delivers up to 20 percent faster speeds than the A19 Pro, a 7-core GPU offering up to 40 percent faster performance, and a Dual 16-core Neural Engine providing double the AI compute capacity. Memory bandwidth is increased by 50 percent compared to the previous generation.
To maintain performance during heavy workloads, Apple introduced a new chip package inspired by its M-series silicon that connects the A20 Pro directly to a custom-designed vapor chamber. This thermal system delivers up to 35 percent better sustained performance than the iPhone 17 Pro.
A dual-battery architecture places one high-energy cell on each side of the hinge. Working alongside internal energy-rebalancing algorithms, the power system delivers:
- Up to 31 hours of video playback when using the inner display exclusively.
- Up to 44 hours of video playback when using the outer display exclusively.
- Up to 24 hours of mixed usage when utilizing both displays equally.
- Fast charging up to 50 percent in approximately 20 minutes wired, or 30 minutes via MagSafe or Qi2 wireless chargers.
Camera Capabilities and Dual-Display Modes
The camera array consists of a 48MP Fusion Main camera with sensor-shift optical image stabilization and an integrated 2x optical-quality Telephoto option, paired with a 48MP Fusion Ultra Wide camera capable of macro photography. Front-facing capture is handled by a Center Stage camera and the under-display FaceTime camera.
The folding form factor enables several software-driven camera features:
- Smart Take: Uses on-device AI running on the A20 Pro to automatically analyze scenes and fire the shutter when subjects pose.
- Duo Preview & Rear Selfies: Displays live previews on the outer screen, allowing subjects to adjust framing or take high-resolution selfies using the primary rear cameras.
- Duo FaceTime: Permits additional participants in the same physical room to join video calls via the outer display and camera feed, while Dual Capture transmits front and rear feeds simultaneously.
- Kid Cue: Plays animations on the outer display to draw children’s attention toward the lens.
- Pro Video Capabilities: Supports 4K recording at 120 fps in Dolby Vision HDR, post-capture Cinematic effect adjustments up to 60 fps, and advanced Audio Mix algorithms for voice isolation.
Software, Connectivity, and Environmental Specifications
The device ships with iOS 27, which shifts core navigation controls, system status indicators, and the Dock to the sides of the display to preserve vertical workspace. The operating system introduces native Split View side-by-side multitasking for running two apps or two windows of the same app simultaneously.
StandBy mode functions on both screens without requiring an active charger, transforming the propped-up device into a dedicated display hub. Apple Intelligence and the upgraded Siri AI launch alongside iOS 27, providing onscreen contextual awareness, personal context search across apps, spatial photo editing, and integration with the SynthID standard for AI image identification.
Wireless connectivity is managed by the N1 networking chip (enabling Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6, and Thread) and the C2 cellular modem, which supports mmWave in the U.S. The iPhone Duo uses an eSIM-only layout globally and features iPhone Handoff to transfer cellular numbers between devices.
From an environmental standpoint, the iPhone Duo is manufactured using 35 percent recycled content overall. This includes 100 percent recycled cobalt in the dual batteries and 100 percent recycled titanium in the hinge cover, with supply chain operations powered by 60 percent renewable energy.
