
Google DeepMind and Google Research have deployed WeatherNext 3, an advanced AI-powered global weather forecasting system engineered to generate real-time, localized climate predictions every hour at a 5-kilometer spatial resolution.
The new system bypasses traditional, compute-heavy numerical approximations by directly ingesting live geostationary satellite mosaics and real-world ground station data.
Bypassing slow traditional mathematical modeling allows WeatherNext 3 to output fresh predictions every 60 minutes at roughly five times the spatial resolution of its predecessor—providing critical lead time as severe storms, cold fronts, and extreme weather systems form.
The increased processing power allows the platform to capture surface temperature and moisture variations down to 5 kilometers (0.05°) and monitor surface winds at 10 kilometers (0.1°).
In head-to-head testing against standard numerical weather prediction baselines, WeatherNext 3 reduced error metrics on key precipitation benchmarks by up to 50%.
For general consumers planning a day or more in advance, the update yields up to 50% higher accuracy in rain and snow forecasts. The statistical gains are most pronounced in regions that have historically relied on less dependable weather modeling.
Beyond general forecasting, WeatherNext 3 processes targeted atmospheric variables designed to assist electrical grid operators and renewable energy providers:
- Turbine-height wind metrics: Measures surface winds at 100 meters for precise wind farm generation modeling.
- Multi-layer cloud mapping: Tracks complex cloud formations to forecast solar panel performance.
- Solar irradiance data: Provides direct solar radiation tracking to optimize energy distribution.
WeatherNext 3 is live today, powering weather features across Google Search, the Gemini app, Google Maps, the Google Maps Platform Weather API, and Google Earth Engine.
