AI mania pushes chip stock toward dangerous bubble

·

Lam Research delivered strong fiscal Q1 results and raised guidance, reinforcing its position as a core beneficiary of AI and memory capex, while its stock trades near highs and debate grows over whether AI upside is already priced in.

The shares recently traded near $158.70, roughly 5% below the 52 week high of about $167, valuing the company at approximately $162 billion and about 28 times trailing earnings, reflecting a premium AI exposure without extreme multiple expansion risk.

Revenue reached $5.32 billion for the quarter ended September 28, 2025, up roughly 28% year over year, while non GAAP gross margin hit a record 50.6% and non GAAP EPS rose to $1.26, supported by strong demand for advanced etch and deposition tools tied to AI and memory production.

Guidance for the December quarter came in ahead of expectations, with management projecting revenue of about $5.2 billion plus or minus $300 million and non GAAP EPS of around $1.15, signaling sustained momentum rather than a one quarter spike.

Geographic exposure remains concentrated in Asia, with China representing about 43% of revenue, creating strategic upside tied to regional manufacturing dominance but elevating regulatory and geopolitical risk tied to export controls and trade policy.

The company expanded its Oregon footprint with a $65 million R&D facility designed to scale development of next generation etch and deposition tools, positioning Lam to capture structural demand tied to AI driven chip complexity rather than short term cycle noise.

Lam controls an estimated 45% share of the global etch market and holds strong positions in deposition, giving it leverage to growth in gate all around transistors, 3D NAND and high bandwidth memory, which are critical for AI infrastructure.

Its balance sheet remains strong, with cash near $6.7 billion, continued aggressive share repurchases of nearly $1 billion in the last quarter, and a quarterly dividend of $0.26 per share, underscoring management’s confidence in free cash flow durability.

Analysts remain broadly constructive, with most ratings clustered around Buy or Hold and price targets largely centered in the mid $150s to high $160s, suggesting limited near term upside unless AI related capex accelerates further.

Key risks center on export restrictions tied to China, the cyclical nature of semiconductor capital spending, insider share sales, and a valuation that leaves limited margin for execution missteps if AI demand slows.

Lam Research now sits in a high conviction position within the AI semiconductor supply chain, with fundamentals strengthening but future returns increasingly dependent on the pace and durability of global AI and memory investment rather than multiple expansion.
