LG Electronics is shifting its appliance development strategy, moving away from treating ice production as a standard refrigerator feature and reframing it as a tailored “Ice Solution.”
Driven by changing consumer habits, rising demand for home café setups, and expanding beverage culture globally, the company is prioritizing specialized ice types, hygiene standards, and higher production capacity to match modern lifestyles.
According to LG product planning, sales, and marketing leaders, modern consumers no longer view ice as a simple commodity, but as an essential element of their daily routines.
“We use the term “solution” because this is not just about making ice, but about solving everyday customer needs,” said Sangdeuk Son of LG Product Planning. “From a product planning perspective, that means defining the relevant standards for hygiene, ice type and convenience, so customers can enjoy the right ice at the right moment.”
Redefining Standards for Home Ice
LG’s research indicates that modern ice technology must meet three fundamental criteria to satisfy current market expectations:
- Hygiene: Ice is consumed directly every day, making cleanliness a non-negotiable priority.
- Suitability: Consumers require specific ice geometries optimized for distinct drink types and occasions.
- Convenience: Appliances must deliver reliable production speed, adequate storage capacity, and seamless dispenser access.
“What we hear in the field is very similar and customer feedback is remarkably consistent: clean ice, fast production and sufficient ice availability remain the top priorities,” said Minjae Kwon of Asia Sales. “These insights closely align with the principles we follow when developing LG Ice Solution.”
Designing Ice for Lifestyle Applications
To address varied drinking habits, LG has developed specialized ice options engineered for specific uses:
- Craft Ice: Spherical ice that melts slowly to preserve the flavor profiles of spirits like whiskey.
- Mini Craft Ice: Scaled for lighter, café-style cold drinks consumed at home.
- Crushed Ice: Formulated for rapid temperature reduction in everyday cold beverages.
- Nugget Ice & Mini Cubed Ice: Soft, chewable varieties designed for casual sipping and snacking.
“As customer expectations have shifted from functionality to lifestyle-driven value, our perspective on ice has evolved as well,” explained Sungeun Kim of Marketing Communication. “Ice is now connected to “everyday moments” – helping to keep you hydrated while you do your daily chores, letting you enjoy that premium, café feeling at home and supporting you when you’re busy entertaining guests.”
Son added that understanding these daily patterns allows engineers to focus beyond basic mechanical output. “Today, innovation is about more than improving ice-making technology. It’s about understanding how customers use ice in their daily lives,” Son said. “Ice preferences vary depending on lifestyle, beverage habits and personal tastes. By understanding those patterns, we can design more meaningful experiences.”
Expanding Global Demand and Market Shifts
While ice has long been an integral part of home refrigeration in Western markets, consumer behavior in Asia is undergoing a rapid transition. Warm climates combined with an expanding home café culture are elevating ice from a basic utility to an essential daily requirement.
“In many Asian countries, ice is not a premium option—it is part of everyday life,” Kwon noted. “In hot and humid climates, cold drinks and ice are often essential to daily comfort. As a result, customers are asking not only whether a refrigerator can make ice, but how well that ice fits their lifestyle and needs.”
Son emphasized that this trend extends beyond regional climate factors into a broader global shift.
“While ice has long been an essential part of the beverage experience in markets such as the U.S. and Europe, its role is continuing to expand in many other regions,” Son said. “In Asia, where hot or room-temperature beverages have traditionally been more common, ice is still evolving from a simple cooling tool into a more experience-driven element of everyday drinks. At the same time, the rapid growth of café culture and home entertaining is driving demand for a wider variety of ice experiences. We see this as a global shift, and our goal is to lead it by making diverse ice solutions more accessible to customers around the world.”
Engaging Consumers Through Lifestyle Communication
To support this product shift, LG launched its digital campaign under the slogan “Ice to Meet You,” designed to connect specialized ice options directly with consumer habits.
“Because our ice technology is already well established, we can now focus on how ice fits into different customer lifestyles,” Kim said. “Some customers want café-quality iced beverages at home, while others want ice for entertaining guests or for staying refreshed throughout the day. Rather than promoting ice as a feature, we communicate how having the right ice for the right moment makes everyday life better.”
Kim noted that the slogan highlights how different ice forms serve different personal routines, whether for simple daily hydration or home bartending. Kwon added that market response in Asia has been exceptionally receptive, with consumers connecting immediately to the accessible messaging.
